NEW YORK, May 26.—Public utili- ties and olls shared the speculative spotlight with ayiation and trading ©orporation issues on today’s firm curb market. Although Electric Bond & Share at times was up 2 points and its asso- ¢late, American & Foreign Power, was up half that amount, their movements and those of the New York State pub- lic utilities, such as Niagara Hudson, Eastern States Power B and St. Regis Paper, did not detract attention from ‘hb air and trading corporation groups. ities Service was active, as also ‘were the rights, but fluctuations re- mained small. AUTO OUTPUT HELD AT RECENT LEVELS Spotty Market Conditions Result in Rigid Cheok on Pro- duction. Special Dispatch to The Star. DETROIT, May 26.—A spotty market continues to hold automobile production to the manufacturing schedules set for this month, with the prospect that out- put will continue until June brings the usual seasonal tapering off. Current voluma is estimated to be maintaining | sam rage of 100,000 cars a week. An h the low-priced lines con- tinue to hold the advantage gained as the result of general business slackness, the cars at $1,200 and up are getting a fair share of patronage. This readjustment thn the sutomo- bile builders aré passing through differs from previous of the same kin because it is red that reduction of prices and consequent risk in decline of earnings will not help matters; therefore, scarcely any price reductions have been made, except in Mncu where certain lines are being closed to make way for new stuff, llmelpaung the 1931 season. ‘The solidity that producing compa- nies have built up in the last five years has been predicated on the experience of 1920 and 1921, when the price-cut- ting and consequent losses were allowed to run rife. Year after year the busi- ness has been undergoing the change from a large number of companies pro- ducing small quantities of ecars to stgtus of a small number of manufs turers producing the larger number of cars.
