MORE FINDS PROVE NEVADA RACE OLD P00 Articles of Human Manu- facture Found in 20,000- i Year-0Id Rocks. B the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, May 26.—Dr. James B. Scherer, director of the Southwest Museum, has announced the finding in @Gypsum Cave, Nev., of a wealth of ad- @itional evidence that prehistoric man amed the American continent prob- ly at least 20,000 years ago. Last week announcement was made at excavation of the cave had re- vealed camp fire ashes, charcoal and burnt wood. Nine hundred artifacts, or prehistoric objects made by man, Dr. Scherer re- rted, had been recovered so far, most- ly from beneath layers of rock which took ages of time to form from overhead drippings. These include scores of broken atlatls, long two-piece dart which antedates the bow and ar- row; many flint points similar to an arrowhead, for the atlatls; feathers bound with sinew, supposedly used as prayer sticks; a magnificent white stone knife four inches long with a wooden handle affixed by splitting and then binding with pitch; a necklace of a type never before found in American archaeological history, made of joints of & centipede strung on fiber of a desert place: piece of burnt wood three or four feet away from the fire ashes, and many translucent gypsum pendants cut in odd shapes and drilled with a hole for suspension. “In every one of the five rooms of the gypsum cave.” said Dr. Scherer “our excavations have brought to light objects of human manufacture lying in such relation to remains of prehistoric animals as to require exceedingly in- genious argument to explain the cir- THE ‘EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Dr. Mark Harrington, archeologist and discoverer of the cave, is there directing the excavation work. Dr. Harrington formerly was connected with the Heye Indian Foundation of New York. ‘The museum director, explaining the proof of antiquity, pointed out that the bones, camp fire ashes and many other prehistoric remains were buried beneath seven distinct strata totaling seven feet in depth.
