George Washington was a real estate man as well as'a heroic figure in Amer- ican history and the Father and First President of his country, d it seems reasonable to assume that large part of the wealth he accumulated came from real estate, according to an ar- ticle in the New York Herald Tribune. The papsr quotes the following pro- spectus or advertisement of one of Washington’s offers to his fellow coun- trymen, who then were subjects of the British crow “The subscriber having obtained ents for upward of 20,000 acres of on the Ohio and Great Kanhawa| (10,000 of which are situated on the banks of the first-mentioned river, be- tween the mouths of the two Kanhaw: and the remainder on the Great Kan hawa, or New River, from the moutk, or near it, upward, in one continued survey) proposes to divide the same into any fixed tenements that may be desired and lease them upon moderate terms, allowing a xeasonable number of years rent free, provided within the space of two years from next Octobet 3 acres for every 50 contained in each lot, apd proportionately for a lesser quantity, shall be cleared, fenced and tilled; and that by or before the time limited for the advancement of the first Tent 5 acres for every hundred, and proportionately, as above, shall be in- closed and laid down in good grass for meadow; and moreover that at least 50 good fruit trees for every like quantity of land shall be planted on the prem- ises. Any persons inclinable to setile on these lands may be more fully in- formed of the terms by applying to the subscriber, near Alexandria, or in his absence to Mr. Lund Washington, and would do well in communicating their intentions before the 1st of October next, in order that a sufficient number of lots may be laid off to answer demand. “As these lands are among the first which have been surveyed in the part of the country they lle in, it is almost needless to premise that none can ex- ceed them in Inxuriance of soll, or con- venience of situation, all of them lying upon the banks either of the Ohio or Kanhawa, and abounding with fine fish and wild fow] of various kinds, as also in most excellent meadows, many of which (by the bountiful hand of na- ture) are, in their perfect state, almost fit for the scythe. From every part of these lands water carriage is now had to Fort Pitt by an easy communication, and from Fort-Pitt up the Monongahela to Redstone vessels of convenient bur- then may and do pass continually, from whence, by means of Cheat River and other navigable branches of the Monon- gahela, it is thought the portage to Po- towmack may and will be reduced with~ in the compass of a few miles, to the great ease and convenience of the set- tlers in transporting the products of their lands to market. To which m: be added that as patents have now ac- tually passed the seals for the several tracts here offered to be leased, settlers on them may cultivate and enjoy the lands in peace and safety, notwith- standing the unsettled counsels respect- ing a new colony on the Ohio; and es no right money is to be paid for these lands, and quit-rent of 2 shillings ster- ling a hundred, demandable some years hence only, it is highly presumabie that they will always be held upon & more desirable footing than where both these are laid on with a very heavy hand. BALTIMORE, May 24.—Loans total- ing $16,000,000 will be voted on by the Urges State Supervision. BALTIMORE, May 324.—Reasonable State supervision of building associa- tions is most desirable for investors, the borrowers and the associations, Ernest A. Hale of Boston, president of the United States League of Building Associations, told members of the Real Estate Board of Baltimore at a lunch- eon here this week. Mr. Hale spoke on the “Advantages and Disadvantages of State Supervision of Building Associa< tions.” City of Baltimore in the election next| = November. ‘The port development commission will submit $10,000,000 of the $50,000,000 harbor improvement loan to the voters. It is pointed out that unless the pro- posed loan is ratified by the voters the commission would be without ample funds for the improvement of the har- bor, all but $1,500,000 of its last loan of $10,000,000 having been expended in the erection of the McComas street terminal for the Western Maryland Rallway Co. ‘The administration also will submit to the voters in November the addi- tional airport loan of $2,500,000, the new bridge and paving loan of $2,000,000 and the $1,500,000 loan for the erec- tion of a school building for handi- capped children. 0il Company Official Dead. EDINBURGH, Scotland, May 24— The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland is unable to see any ro- mance in_ the marriages of Gretna Green. The assembly has agreed to present a memorial to the secretary of state for Scotland urging the govern- ment to pass legislation which would put an end to “the evils” resulting from the runaway marriages performed at the Green. ‘The practice of informal marriage at the Gretna Green Tol! House, the as- sembly was told by several speakers, was growing rapidly. There were as many as 300 such unions during one recent year. It was charged, too, that the profits made from exhibiting the place where the marriages were per- formed were “almost unbelieveable, D. Many millions of dollars will be expended in this district on road building and plant extension. Expenditures for new construction by the Consolidated Gas, Electric Light & Power Co. of Baltimore during the first three months of 1930 were 31 per cent greater than during the same period last year.
