CLEVELAND, May 20.—A narrow escape from an aviation tragedy in ~hich an air mail plane near Cleveland Alrport evely missed diving into an inflammatYe-gas balloon, which was carrying Ward T. Van Orman, Ameri- ca's premier balloonist, and six pas- sengers, was disclosed here last night. Occupants of the balloon besides Van Orman, were Dr. Wolfgang Klemperer, research engineer of the Goodyear- Zeppelin Corporation, Akron, and five students from the same company. Device to Enable Parachute to Fly Claimed by Jumper Machine Worn on Back Has Propellor and 7-H.P. Motor. By the Associated Press. ROOSEVELT FIELD, N. Y., May 20.— Henry Bushmeyer, professional para- chute jumper, announced yesterday he had invented a machine to enable parachute jumpers to travel about 20 mllned in any direction after their chutes opened. Bushmeyer said the device consisted of a two-cylinder, seven-horsepower motor with two batteries, a 4-foot pro- peller and a steel-and-board framework which is attached to the jumper’s chest and back. Flight direction would be obtained by fuel capacity of one quart of gasoline. H. P. Little, one of the country's Bushmeyer declared he would give a best air mail gflou. was flying near the airport early Sunday when he suddenly saw directly in front of him a white light. Not until he swerved and was out of danger—by a margin of inches— did he realize that the object in his path had been the bulky gas-filled bag of & balloon. “It would have been ter- rible had I smashed into it—all that inflammable gas,” Little said. Van Orman said the white light sus- pended below the basket of the balloon was the only light required by the De- partment of Commerce. Balloonists should advise airplane terminals of their position in the air as a warning to aviators, Little said. Such notification is not necessary, ac- cording to Van Orman. “Pilots should watch where they are going,” he said. “They must remember that others be- sides themselves use the airways.” HOOVER TALKS ON AIR Greetings to Road Conference to Go Out Over Chain.
