Dates Back to 1785, ‘The old First Presbyterian Church of ‘Washington city had its beginning in 1795 in a carpenter shop erected on the grounds of the White House for the use of the workmen engaged in building it. This little shop, becoming too small for the congregation, a move was made to what was then a farm house near the corner of Tenth and F streets, thence to the Academy East— & Masonic lodge—near the Navy Yard, thence to a basement room in the Cap- itol used by the Supreme Court. Here the communion of the Lord's supper was first celebrated by the congrega- ng the War of 1812 the first Church Bullding was erected on the south side of the Clglml building, and ‘was known in church history as “The Little White Church Under the Hill.” ‘The corner stone of the new building was laid on the present site on John Marshall place, April 10, 1827. The church wes dedicated December 9, 1827. Ellas Boudinot Caldwell, son of the famous Rev. James Caldwell of New Jersey, chaplain of the New Jersey Brigade in the Continental Army from 1777 to 1779, was on the first bench of elders. On June 24, 1795, order was taken for the ordination and installa- tion of Rev. John Brackenridge as the first pastor. Pastor Nearly 50 Years. Under Dr. Byron Sunderland, for nearly 50 years its pastor, the Old Church sprang into national fame. Lincoln welcomed him to the White , and he served as chaplain of the Senate during the war. President .vn,ksm came to the church when it first moved to its present site | in 1827. Presidents Polk and Pierce attended. Cleveland came with his ing wife, to whom he was mlmed g“Dl‘ Sunderland at the Whi Shfi was a member during Cle hnds rst term of office. Grant attended wlun he was general. Admiral Dahl- mvu a regular attendant with his ly, his children having been raised in the Sabbath school. James Buchanan attended while Senator, also Senator ‘Thomas H. Benton and Rufus Choate. ‘Webster, though Unitarian, attended occasionally. Henry Clay spoke from the old pulpit. President Harding's last church at- tendance before his death was in this church on Memorial day, May 30, 1923, on the occasion of the dedication of Grant and Dahlgren pews to the use of the soldiers and sailors of the Republic. Scope of New Church Site. ‘The new church on Massachusetts avenue at the intersection of Thirty- sixth and Garfield streets consists of about 3,500 square feet of ground.
