Net revenues after de- ducting taxes and uncollectibles. were $142,352, against $141,390 in March, 1929, For the three months ending March 31, the com- pany's operating revenues amounted 10 $2,126,572. Gross additions to plant and equip- ment in the District for the three months ending March 31, were $1,091,- 905. Retirements during this period were $386,331, making net additions, $705,574. Net additions to plant for the 12 months, ending March 31, were $3,753,744. A net gain of 933 telephones were added to the system In Washington during March, making 160,946 tele- phones in service at the end of the month. Telephone users made 17~ W. J. Harahan, senior vice pres: Jdent of the Chesapeake & Ohio Rail- ‘way, told the stockholders at the an- nual meeting at Richmond that the road is planning to spend $51,336,630 on additions, betterments, purchase of equipment and construction of branch lines. Part of the funds will be de- rived from the $38,000,000 common stock to be offered stockholders and the rest will be appropriated froml earnings. The directors were unan- imously re-elected. The C. & O. minority committee, holding 7413 shares, opposed adoption of resolutions approving acts of di- rectors during the past year and the 1929 annual report because of the in- clusion in the report of a punmfh relating to the application filled with the Integstate Commerce Commission asking thority to acquire control of the Erie, Nickel Plate, Virginian, Pere Muquet{e, ‘Wheeling & Lake Erie and other roads. The company recently withdrew its application. Thomas B. Scott acted as spokesman for the pro- tective committée, representing George 8. Kemp, Jonathan Bryan and other members. Gains in District Insurance. New life insurance written in the District of Columbia in March showed & gain of over 15 per cent over the same month a year ago, according to Hartford, Conn., reports received today. ‘The United States showed a gain of only § e cent. West Virginia wrote 12 per cent more mew insurance in March, and Virginia insurance sales were § cent above March 1929. Maryland, however, was off 1 per cent, being the only State in the Bouth Atlantic group to record a decline. Among the States still farther South, rgla was off 3 per cent and North Carolina 5 per cent for the month. South Carolina wrote just the same amount of insurance as last year. The report states that South Dakota made the best showing, with an advance of 29 per cent, and Mississippi had the largest decline, 19 per cent. The first quarter figures reveal the fact that the country as a whole has taken 6 per cent more insurance this year than in the same period in 1929.4 ‘The South Atlantic States increased their monthly production 2 per cent over March 1929. For the first quarter of 1930 these States show an average gm of 7 per cent over the same period 1929. The section gain for the 12- month period which ended March 31 1930, was 5 per cent over the preceding 12-month period. New Van Sweringen Financing. New financing by the Van Sweringen interests to be handled by a group of bankers headed by the Guaranty Trust Co.,, of New York, is expected within the next few days. This financing will probably take the form of five-year notes carrying warrants to purchase stock of the Delaware to carry on ac- | tivities of the Van Sweringens outside | the raflroad fleld. The members of the Washington Bond Club heard William B. Burruss with unusual interest yesterday as he ave his address on “Shakespeare, the esman.” He iauded Shakespeare as one of the world's greatest salesmen, largely because of his brilliant under- standing of human nature and his ability to write what people liked best. The speaker declared that Shakespeare knew how to arrest the attention of the customer, arouse his interest in what he had to offer, create a desire for it, com- plete the transaction and at the same time develop the satisfaction of the customer. NEW YORK, April 23.—The stock market opened with an outburst of strength today, turned reactionary around midday, when fresh selling de- veloped in the copper shares, and then rallied again in the early afternoon un- der the leadership of the amusements and public utilities. Trading was in fairly heavy volume, with the ticker running about 15 minutes behind the market. “There was little in the day’s business news to influence the price movement. Arthur Reynolds, Chicago banker, was quoted as saying that ~business is im- proving more slowly than optimists would ?nve us believe, but, nevertheless, it is improving and, in my opinion, will continue to improve .with 'prob‘bly no considerable upturn until after July 1.” A rebound in wheat prices had a favor- able effect on speculative sentiment, but most of the day’s earnings tegonl made unfavorable comparisons with the first quarter of last year. Many of the leading commission houses exfruud the opinion that the recent selling was in the nature of a correction of a weakened technical po- sition and that the market was in a much beter position as a result of the shake-out. A drop in call money from 4 to 314 per cent, with loans available in the outside market as low as 3 per cent, had a favorable effect on senti- ment and probably provided some stim- ulus to pool operations. In the mid-day selling, Anaconda, Kennecott and some of the other cop- rs sank to new lows for the year. Eemndlum Steel and Pittsburgh Coal each dropped more than 5 points, the latter touching a new low. Union Car- bide fell 3 points and United States Steel common, American Can, Radio and some of the other leaders sold down a point or two, but most of them made good recovery in the early aft- ernoon rally. J. 1. Case was again a spectacular feature, adding nearly 10 points to its recent sharp gain by touching another new high at 362%. Diamond Match soared 11 points to 230, and Keith:Al- bee-orPheum preferred jumped 12'a to 141, all new hs. Worthington Pump, Allied Chemical, Peoples Gas and Radio- Keith-Orpheum sold 5 to 9 points high- er, the last named attaining a new peak at 47%. ‘Associated Dry Goods, Brunswick Ter- minal, Transcontinental Oil, New York Dock, Texas & Pacific Railroad, Mc- Keesport Tin Plate, Loew's, Pathe jssues and Fox Film all moved into new high und on gains ranging from 1 to near- ly 5 points.
