The market opened lower and there were persistent offerings thereafter, but as a rule losses were not large and there were a number of advance: ‘The only fresh ammunitien that op- erators for the decline had overnight was the copper statistics. The week end trade reviews were encouraging and otherwise there was no change in the business situation. The increase in stocks of refined copper on April 1 over March 1 was 22897 tons, and the guesses of the increase had ranged from 20,000 to 25,000 tons. Production of copper in the United States in March was 61,091 tons against 59,196 in Feb- ruary. ’ Besides the foregoing data, the bears stressed the weakness in copper in the London market. Declines on the Lon- don Metal Exchange for several days now have been little short of drastic. The market rallied at the end under the leadership of some of the utilities. International Telephone & Telograph was taken in large blocks at the best of the recovery, American & Foreign Power turned upward and American Water Works made a new high. Pacific Gas & Electric did better at this stage also. ' ‘The late rally included United States Steel, which, above 194, was up on the day.
