—10 ‘THE 'EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, SATURDAY, APRIL 12, ' 1930. SERVICES T0 BEGIN INNEW STRUCTURE Universalists Will Open Na- tional Edifice Tomorrow at 11 0’Clock. The new Universalist National Me- morial Church at Sixteenth and 8 sireets will have its first services there tomorrow at 11 o'clock with a vesper service at 4:30 o'clock. Dr. Frederic W. Perkins, the pastor, will preside. Universalists of the United States Joined in the construction of this church. The movement to build it was officially inaugurated by the Universal General Convention at its session in Deroit in 1920. ‘The edifice, of buff-colored stone and brick, is the work of the architects Allen and Collens of Boston. The con- tractors are the Boyle-Robertson Co. ot this city. The lony tower was built as a tribute to Owen D. Young, distinguished lay- man of the Universalist Church, who is known throughout the world as the sponsor of the “Young Plan on Repara- tions” of 1929, and whose efforts toward the conciliation of peoples has brought him international fame as well as this imposing tribute, “the tower of world peace.” Windows Are Beautiful. ‘The stained-glass windows constitute one of its chief glories. They are not picture windows but mosaics of rich color, deep blue and red and green shot through with glints of gold and amber. The three chancel windows, unified by the great chancel arch, symbolizes “faith, hope, love.” They are the gift to the church of Rev. and Mrs. John van Schaick. jr., formerly of Washing- ton. Dr. van Schaick was the minister \of the Church of Our Father, the prede- «cessor of the National Memorial Church, from 1900 to 1918. He is now editor of the Christian I.lader ‘These windows “are in memory of “the church of the apast thl\t makes the church of today possible.” Other windows in the same general design are placed as memorials, all carrying out a scheme of religious #ymbolism. The altar is stately and simple, its emblems in stone, while the choir seats extend on each side with the large pipe organ in an altar recess. The organ, a memorial to the late Charles L. Hutch- inson of Chicago, is the gift of his widow in memory of one of the charter .members and incorporators of the Car- “Segle Institution here in Washington. Has Cathedral Appearance. Supporting the high, arched ceiling are mlsslvtg pillars of marble, giving the church the appearance of a small cathedral. To the north separated from the main church only by these pillars is a small Aisle Chapel that is & distinctive feature to the church’s service to the community. ‘The Baptistery, in thts Chflpel alcove, s a stone font dedicated in memory of Charles H. Leonard, founder of Chil- dren’s day in American, in 1856. The children ‘of ths church provided the funds for this national Baptistery. The communion_table is in memory of Dr. James F. Pullman, pastor predecessor of Dr. Perkins at the Lynn, Mass, church, from where he came to Wash- gton. The parish house occupies the north- iern half of the building and is almost a school house, having three stories. It also will serve as a community center. In it are the Sunday school, the ‘Young People’s Christian Union and a number of large and small assembly ryooms. Here Miss Eleanor Bonner, as- sistant to Dr. Perkins, Ls in charge of religious_education. ‘The church will hold special Easter Sunday services in the forenoon and @t the 4:30 Verspers.
