SUSPECT IS HELD N 152 SLAYIG Half-Brother of Victim’s Wid- ow Lived Secretly in Home, Lawyer Says. By the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, Aprjl 8.—Renewed | investigation into the mysterious slay- ing eight years ago of Fred Oesterreich, | wealthy apron manufacturer, today had resulted in the arrest of Walter Klein, described as a_half brother of the vic- tim's widow, who was held on a charge of suspicion of murder. The arrest last night resulted from a statement of Herman Shapiro, an attor- ney. who testified Klein had lived in hiding in secret compartments in the house in which Oesterreich’s bullet- | ridden body was discovered. | Mrs ~ Walburga Oesterreich. the widow, was arrested following the slay- | ing and held under technical arrest for | two years while an investigation was | made. She was found after the killing unconscious in a closet of the “murder house.” The closet door was locked from the outside. She was arrested after she attempted to dispose of two pistols. Failure to solve the mystery of the locked closet door played an important part in her release. Shapiro in his statement said that while Mrs. Oesterreich was in the county jail he took food, at her request, | and placed it in a house for Klein. | Later, the attorney said, he scratched | on the walls of the residence and Klein | appeared. Shapiro recited that Klein | told him he lived in the secret compart- ment in the house at the time of the shooting. 400 COMING APRIL 15 | FOR C.A. R.
