HOLLYWOOD, April 2 (NANA).— With local producers discreetly silent regarding the new ethics code for the making of talking pictures, the village faces the same problem which a few years back confronted silent pictures. It was tacitly admitted this morning that leading moguls would rather not be quoted on the better-talkie project. It was generally agreed that, did they talk, nothing of vital import would be said. At such times the village would rather let the other fellow talk. Barring profanity, ridictile of law and sympathy for criminal$, limits motion picture talkie production to the love story. And the love story has been the ‘Waterloo of the talking screen. Sex, which once dominated the silent | ™8] screen, has two possible angles—the young love story, with & boy and & f\rl and another boy or girl and the ulti- mate triumph of the sweet young thing over parental wrath or shallow infatua- tion which carries them away from the true love; the other angle is the good old triangle story—husband and wife and the other man or woman. The cutting room will receive more expensive scenes in its wastebasket | than it has for several years, no doubt of that. The village is half full of pictures of this type not yet completed. Profanity has been ctly guarded |all along. Anna Christie’s “darn” was & concession to the purity of the screen which would have wrecked a less work- manlike celluloid. “‘Obscenity in word, gesture and sug- | gestion,” is & neat little line. But the censorability of obscenity in suggestion | is the moot point.
