By the Assoclated Press. NEW DELHI, India, March 31.— Prohibition ot baby brides becomes eflecnve throughout British India at midnight. Henceforth it will be illegal for mature men to marry girls of 7 and 8 years of age. Specifically the new law forbids the marriage of girls less than 14 and boys less than 18 years of age, | but the law was aimed ai the greater marriage evil which brought upon its Indian proponents the condemnation of many Weslerners. A fine of 1,000 rupees or imprison- ment for one month will be imposed upon any person solemnizing a union which wmes under the ban of the child marriage Tiny bfldea have been rushed to the altar by thousands during the last five months in an effort to forestall the law which was passed last September by the Legislative Assemhly by 67 votes to 14 to become effective April 1.
