Y PROFTTANING Utilities and Rails Are Fea- tures of Lively Short Session. BY JOHN A. CRONE. @pecial Dispetch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 29.—With trad- ing brisk from the opening gong, the curb market today steadily increased its pace as the session progressed, but price movements became irregular &s some Pprofit-taking set in after the violent advance. Utilities and rails, along with indus- s and investent trusts, were. in demand at the opeuing. Buying in some of the pivotal securities, such as Electric Bond & Share and American Superpower, was §0 hes that bunch- g of orders was necessary, causing delaved openings. Electric Bond & Share opened 15 minutes late on 14,500 shares at 1093, off 1. American Superpower, on a lot of 25000 shares, up %. United Light & others whirled. Tampa Electric again was an out- standing feature, as it was bid up about 11 points to a new 1930 top in the first half hour on reported merger moves. ‘The advance in Long Island Lighting common followed publication of report- ed merger negotiations with Brooklyn Union Gas, which were broken off by the former as the price offered was too low. The prospect of joining Niag- ara Hudson with Mohawk Hudson and forming a new company failed to bring bidding into the first named concern. Chesapeake & Ohio new led the rails, | opening at new high on the belief that the Interstate Commerce Commission soon will act on the carriers’ petition to split its shares four for one. Western Maryland first preferred, usually inac- tive, opened up 6 points and then rose 2 points more to 108, a new high for the ye: ar. Cord Corporation started on a block of 4,000 shares at 16%, up ' and at new high level. Anglo-Chilean Nitrate and Newmont Mining again featured the mine list, while some of the special ties, such as Technicolor, slipped to new lows after brisk run-ups in the last few weeks. ‘The air shares also benefited from the early bidding-up process. Aviation Corporation of America and Irving Air Chute mounted into new altitudes and others equaled previous heights or came near them. A miscellaneous lot of industrials, in- cluding Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea, Starrett Corporation and Dow Chem- jcal advanced, some of them reaching new tops. FOREIGN EXCHANGES. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 29.—The week which has practically closed the first quarter of the year has been marked by a better business tone in certain respects, yet without any broad stimu- lation of activity, according to the weekly reviews of business.. Weather and trade conditions evidence more marked irregularity, although the wholesale and jobbing trade has con= tinued its relatively gradual gains over recent weeks. = Response to the change in seasons lacks a full development and has Leen retarded lately by a blizzard in the Central West and low temperatures in some other sections, but advices from various sections are becoming more cheerful as Spring progresses. Gains More Apparent. Dun’s review of business says: “Actual gains in trade, although not widespread or emphatic, are now rather more plainly visible, with textiles, hides and allied products, and some of the metals participating in_varying degree in the improvement. The unsatisfac- tory aspects of the three months’ period now ending, the slowness and irregu- larity of the recovery and the conflict- ing reports of trends have not obscured the underlying factors pointing to ulti- | mate revival, yet a rapid advance is scarcely to be expected after severe economic _disorganization. ~ Readjust- ments _which continue uncompleted naturally impede the process of re- cuperation, but some of the more re- cent movements have indicated that a stronger basis for subsequent better- ment is being gradually attained. “Comparative stabilization of markets even at low levels would be helpful, and buying has shown some tendency to eniarge in quarters where the persistent fall of prices seems to have been checked. The disproportion between supply and demand in some important channels* is being corrected by restric- tion of outputs, while the relatively small stocks of goods in other lines are a supporting element during the present time of curtailed purchasing. The sharp- ly increased operations on securities exchanges have contrasted with an ab- sence of decisive expansion in the business field, yet the strengthened sentiment in financial circles has had a favorable influence, and the main- companies has suggested confidence in the future.” Better Buying of Cotton Goods. Bradstreet’s report on the state of trade says: “Better buying of cotton goods by Southwestern distributors is a cheer- ful note from Westerr centers. Indus- try, too, shows some unevenness in that lagging operations in northern woods have been ended coincident with the beginning of preparations for a big pro- gram of construction and road improve- ment, which have been retarded in some sections by the return of Winter. Com- arisons with a year ago naturally suf- }’9!‘ because this week a year ago saw pre-Easter buying about at its best, whereas this year's three weeks later date of this festival naturally acts as a retarding element. “Reports from the country's leading labor organization go to confirm earlier ideas that February saw employment at about its lowest ebb, whereas a slight gain has been reported in the first halt of March. Lumbering operations Lave tended to lessen, and coal production has been shaded off. In the Pacific Northwest lumber production has been estimated as considerably below ner- mal and hardwood interests in the mid- dle Mississippi Valley report buying backward. Trade and industry continue | generally below a year ago. “In the fron and steel trades, produc- tion has shown a slight ubswm{nund a notable happening, foreshadowing fu- ture activity in outdoor lines, iz the | of plates to be used in making oil and | gas pipe, building of which, especially | n the Middle West and Southwest, is/ expected to be of immense proportions. A somewhat discordant note in this| trade is the report that steel scrap has weakened in price and that slight re- ductions have been made in tank plates, structural shapes, automobile body sheets and steel strips.” Corporation News NEW YORK, March 20.—The follow- | ing is today'’s summary of important corporation news, prepared by Standard Statistics Co., Inc., New York, for the; Assoclated Press. News Trend. | Mercantile reviews of the week report a slightly better tone in business with considerable irregularity still in evi- dence. Response to the change in season lacks full deyvelopment and has been | retarded lately by a blizzard in the Central West and low temperatures in some other sections. Actual gains in trade. ulthough not widespread or em- | phatie, are now rather more plainly visible, with textile, hides and allied | products, and some of the metals par- | ticipating in varying degree in the im- provement. Readjustment which con- linues uncompleted naturally impede | | the process of recuperation. but more recent movements have indicated that a sircnger basis for subseauent better- ment is being gradually attained. Bank clearings at leading cities of the country for the week ended March 27 amounted to $11,339,732.000. a de- cline of 16.7 per cent from the like week a year ago. At New York City clearings totaled $8,160.000,000, or 17.7 per cent below last year’s. In principal centers outside New York, clearings | amounted to $3,179,932,000. a drop of 14 per cerit. Cities showing increases over a year ago are Baltimore, Richmond and Louisville; in addition to New York, declines continue chiefly in the Cen- tral West and at some Southern points. ‘The Companies. MINING DEVELOPMENT IN CHILE INCREASES Mining development in Chile, mainly copper, as the main cause of the rising volume of American capital flowing into that country, is emphasized by Dr. Max Winkler, vice president of Bertron, Griscom & Co., in a study made for the World Peace Foundation. Dr. Winkler ints out that our Chilean investments ave increased almost 35-fold in less than 15 years. “Copper production in 1928, he writes, “was some 30 per cent larger than in 1927, the investment of United States capital having made Chile the second in rank of copper-producing countries.” First Mortgage Loans In Arlington County and Alexandria, V Commonwealth Investment Co., Inc. 808 15th St. N.W.
