It will have a linoleum flooring. Beneath the windows will be a counter covered with black glass. On the right-hand side will be a small storage closet for boxes of various sizes and even a roll of wrapping paper. Beneath the counter will be drawers to hold shears, glue, cord, ribbons, rubber bands, ruler and so forth, thus fitti the place as a handy work room. ¥ This counter may also be used as & desk where the housewife may attend to her accounts. Filing space for bills also may be arranged. This room is designed for still another purpose. The builders point out that it is very annoying for the man of thc house to come upon an array of women's hose and silk garments hung up to dry in the bath room, in cases where the housewife wishes to wash these dainty things. Therefore, in this utility room will be provided a beautiful, colored sink, an ironing board and drying rack adjusted over the radiator. Closet space in this utility room will provide for the vacuum cleaner, waxer, oil mops, brooms and other equipment. On the third floor of the house will be two maid's rooms and bath, as well 1t - Coentet GARAGL HE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. Ludlow, chair- man of the committee on industrial relations of the American In- stitute of Architects. Not many years ago, he points out, trained architects in this country were few, as the appearance of our older buildings indicate. “The architect,” says Mr. Ludlow, who is vice president of the New York Building Congress, “is not one who merely allocates brick and mortar, stone, steel and wood, but he goes further, and actually creates a super-physical quality called character. “Recall the buildings of two ar three generations ago, when architects were almost unknown—those miles of brown- stone fronts with monstrous cornices of sheet metal; those rows of brick facades where the criterion of excellence was that every brick should be the exact shade of color of every other brick; the steep-pitched roofs, known as man- sards, ugly with filigree crestings; the jigsaw patterns and écrolls - cut into marvelous convolutions by the artist of the bandsaw. r “But worst of all was the planning, or lack of planning, of these buildings— the badly shaped and dark rooms, the small windows and the many rooms without windows; the winding, narrow stairways, and such bad arrangement {of plan that large areas of space were literaly thrown away.” ‘The appalling amount of knowledge, experience and ability required of the trained architect, Mr. Ludlow asserts, seems in its recital almost too much to be comprehended in a single individual. For much of the necessary technique, he explains, the architect must rely u his organization, which includes drafts- men, superintendents of construction and engineers, whom he must be able to direct. “If the architect,” Mr. Ludlow adds, “s to be capable of planning and directing work of scme size, he must not only have had a long, thorough and sometimes costly education, but he must also le period of train- ing as a draftsman, often indeed acting as building superintendent, in order to P Floor Varnish Renovates Your Floors and chnvv; s the Scuffs of er r. For example, he must obtain a general knowledge of the laws relating to building and the preparation of the necessary legal documents. . He must learn the laws of the city and the State in which he operates. “In order to be able to plan a build- ing at all, he must have a good general knowledge of construction, plumbing, heating and electric wiring. He must have an understanding of ventilation acoustics, decoration, painting and a score of other thmf.s. “If he is capable of %I‘Annlnl ‘hos- pitals, colleges, churches, banks, private homes, club houses, industrial plants, and the like, he must have a more or less intimate knowledge of the cus- toms, the usages and the requirements of their varjous activities. “The architect is also called upon by clients and prospective clients for ap- roximate estimates on all sorts of gufldlng projects, and he must be able to arrive at a figure which is fairly near what later will be the figure of the low- t_bidder.
