A plan is being projected bhnulhewnnn{mvymlo stations which dot the Pacific, Atlantic and Gult charge of this work at New York, by mutual agreement of ship operators and the Commerce De- t, but at other key ports there no arrangement of any kind, with the result that more expeditious service has been noted in the New York area in the handling-of distress traffic. Although by internaticnal agreement the transmitters of ships in distrecs have the right of way over the ether, an orderly system of co-operation by other craft and shore stations does not exist. The vessel in closest proximity to the disabled craft goes to its rescue. But it is vital, in the interest of :fieed‘ that there be some supervisory ore agency which can designate a particular shore station to take up the communication, and which has -uthor- ity to order silent broadcast and other transmitters which may be within the interference range of the transmitter on_the vessel in trouble. It has been decided to call a formal conference of steamship operators, com- mercial radiotelegraph companies main- taining lhlp-m~shore service and the various Federal agencies identified both with radio and shipping. At this con- ference, the date for which has not yet been set, the general subject of speed- ing up 8 O S traffic will be considersd and the plan for Navy supervision (P o9 Major “Chain” Features ‘TONIGHT. 7:00—Amos Andy, black- ~face comedians—WRC and N.
