NEW YORK, March 12.—The stock market ran into a storm of selling today oh what appeared to be a record-break- ing volume of business for the year. Scores of issues were carried down 1 to 10 points, half a dozen or so to their lowest prices of the year, before the re- action was checked at midday by a ) brisk recovery which materially reduced the early declines. Total sales crossed the 2,000,000-share mark before the end of the second hour, with the tape aver- Wufly half an hour late. the reaction was widely re- garded as a necessary correction of a tem top-heavy speculative posi- tion, the selling received considerable impetus from some unfavorable busi- ness developments. Call money renewed unchanged at 4 per ceni, but the supply exceeded the demand "and the rate was dropped to 3%. Timle money and commercial pa- per were unchanged. Wall Street is confidently, looking forward to a de- crease in Yhe New York Federal re- serve rediscount rate tomorrow. Utllities ayain bore the brunt of the selling.
