A—10 %% FAVORS ELECTION | OF SCHOOL BOARD Yaden Characterizes Present Method as Contrary to Self- Government. Characterizing the present method of | having members of the Board of Edu- cation appointed by judges of the Dis- trict Supreme Court as contrary to all rules of self-government, James G. Yaden, former president of the Federa- tion of Citizens' Associations, advooated an elective board before the Citizens’ Forum of Columbia Heights in Wilson Normal School last night. Yaden charged that the board was dominated by Dr. Frank Ballou, super- intendent of schools, when debating the question of the selection of board members. He opposed in debate Paul E. Lesh, former president of the Wash- ington Bar_ Association, who contended that the Supreme Court judges were fully capable of making the appoint- ments. In addition, should the system of election be adopted complications from the colored vote might result. If elected the board would probably conduct itse!f in a more efficient man- ner, Yaden contended, and pointed out that at the present they were not ac- countable to_any head. Lesh and Yaden were selected to de- bate the question of, “Resolved that members of the Board of Education should be elected,” on recommendation of the education committee of the forum. At the conclusion of the argu- ments, however, the civic group was unable to reach a decision and tabled the question for vote until the next monthly meeting.
