These human pi:fipeu shoul dance to his wire-pulling; the very souls of them should leap to his touch. He might be grotesque of face and skeletal of limb, but it was in the mind that real power abode, and his mind was as much above that of his fellow-crea- tures as theirs were above the minds of apes. Thus Master Kuoni looked upon himself in exultant introspection, wor- shiping his own genius and contemp- tuous of the stupidity of those upon whom he was to exercise it. Among these he numbered—and this with the greatest of all relish—that bully brag- gart numbskull the Sire de Rhynsault. Johanna advanced calmly towards the fool, who had now uncovered and uncloaked, and stood forth in his scarlet hood and chaperon above his sult of black. “8ir, though I can scarcely believe the message you have sent me by my serv- ant, I have consented to see you. I beg that you will state your pur?ou." “I wish to ald you in placing your case before the duke. will aid you.” “And who is he?” “The Grand Master of Burgundy.” ‘To her this was but a title. She knew nothing of its recent bestowal. “What influence have you with him?" “I? None.” And then, very slyly, an unmistakable significance in his glance, he added: “But {ou might have; nay. you would have if I know anything ‘There was a long and uncomfortable spell of sllence in which she looked at him with eyes that at first were aflame with anger and then of a steely coldness, At last, with a little smile of scorn, she answered him. “So this is all your vaunted help? A plece of foul advice, which, had I been a woman to do as you propose, I should not have required. Where were your wits there, master fool, that you did not think of that?” She rose. “There is no more to say between us, I think, save to thank you for your wasted pains. I must seek other means. Heaven will reveal the way to me; for there is justice in heaven.” “Ay——in heaven,” he agreed. “But we're upon earth, where justice is for sale” He got up at last and stood before her, and his voice quivered with impatience, almost with anger. “Will you hesitate to buy vengeance upon the guilty at the price you vainly paid to_save the innocent?” She continued to ponder him with that cold, steely glance, & _certain I know one who tightening about the comers of her lips. “It 18 not necessary to put it quite so g‘ulnly. He feigned surprise at so much emo« tion. *“Count Anthony of Guelders.” "What has he to do in this?" “H> might have everything to do if you would but follow my advice.” “Your advice?” Horror pervaded her soul, such horror and such dread as she had never known in all her trials. Con- trolling herself, she asked him: “Why do you name him now? Why did you not name h'm before?’ “I did. From the outset. He is the grand master of Burgundy, newly ap- pointed. He is second in power only to the duke, and what he wills the duke is easlly persuaded to perform. Give me a token that will bring him to you, so that you may make your prayer to him, and I'll warrant—" “Never! Never! Never!” Her vehe- mence_ startled him. and dashed his rising hopes. She advanced upon him, & wild creature now, frantic with fear and shame and horror. “Never, do you hear me, master fool? He is—" She broke off. Even in her agitation she perceived how unnecessary it was to give the fool her confidence, to tell him that Count Anthony of Guelders was the one man in the world to whom she could not appeal, the one man whom she could never bear to see again, the one man whom she could wish should never know her shame and her defilement. She desired if possible to con= tinue to live in his memory as he had known her in Walcheren. If that were not possible, if knowledge of the events must come to him, at least let him never again behold her, let her hide herself from him, the only man who had power to revive her shame so that 1% must scorch her up and shrivel her t)_ashes. But of this she said nothing to the forl. Something of it he guessed, how= ever, from the abrupt manner in which her self-control had slipped from her, from the terror that had glittered in her eyes. She controlled herself now, to be sear- ed by a new thought. It was to Count Anthony of ail lliving men that this creature proposed that she should sell herself for justice. But swift on the heels of that sudden anger with the fool came pity. How little he knew his world, after all, this apostle of evil, to judge Count Anthony a man to be 80 bought! “Go, sir,” she dismissed him. “There 1s no more to be said between us." He departed, vexed and crestfallen. Things were not to run the course he had planned for them. Here were des- tinizs which he had thought to shape with his thumbs as a potter shapes his pots. But. unexpected elements had been present in the clay, elements unusual in the clay of humanity as Kuoni knew it. All was not done yet.
