" JUMP IN INCOME TAX COLLECTIONS D.C. and Maryland Area Falls in Line With Gain Through- out Country. Income taxes in this collection area, including Maryland and the District of Columbia, showed a substantial increase during the calendar year 1929, as com- pared to 1928, falling in line with the gain evident throughout the country, according to figures made public today by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. ‘The Maryland-District of Columbia collection district turned in a total in- come tax of $44.368913.56 in 1928, which jumped to $51.201,029.50 in 1929. During the same period the returns for the whole Nation on income taxes in- creased from $2,169,417.231.64 to $2- 502,805,758.87. Miscellaneous taxes fell off in the local district from $4,746.40' to $3,- 759,944.08, while they increased for the country as a whole from $605,859,724.59 to $625513,602.02, during the same period. ‘The total collections from all sources for this collection district thus showed |a gain from $49,115,314.78 to $54,960,~ 973.58, while the country’s total internal revenue gained from $2,775,276,956.23 to $3,128,319,360.89. Figures also show that the returns for the first half of this present fiscal year ending December 31 were $1,184,- 1602927, an increase of $171,531.330 over the same period of the previous | year. ? Virginia showed a falling off in in- come tax from $21,177,708 to $19,276,- 755, in 1929, but the miscellaneous taxes, including tobacco, jumped from $63,152,527.94, 1n 1928, to $73,144,890.69, in_1929. Individual tax payments for the first six months of the current fiscal year totaled $559,539.113, an increase of $142,591,151; while corporation pay- ments aggregated $625,063,813, an in- crease of more than $28,000,000 over the | same period of the 1929 fiscal year. | In the calendar year 1929 individuals contributed $1,238,132,324 and corpo- |rations paid $1264673.434 into the Treasury, the total being an increase of $333,388,528 over the previous year. | Broadway Purest at 4 A.
