l Something Ought to Be Done About This Good Turn. It matters not ¥y whom 'tis done, A good turn shineth like the sun. —Chatterer the Red Squirrel. For several mornings Chatterer the Red Squirrel had watched his breakfast of corn disappear down the black throat of Blacky the Crow. Chatterer and Blacky are much alike in one thing— meither likes to be out after dark or to start out before daylight. So usually they arrive at the same time over by Farmer Brown's corncrib to pick up the corn that Timmy the Flying Squir- Tel had there in the night. when he peeped out from under crib and saw that Biacky the Crow had not yet arrived. Blacky alighted and as usual shook out his feathers before be- ginning to eat. He stood for a moment or two looking keenly in all directions. Then he began to pick up corn. “He's in a dreadful hurry,” thought Chatterer. “He is picking up that corn as if he hadn't & minute to spare. I wonder what ails him. He certainly s nervous. He keeps looking this way and looking that way.” All the time that Chatterer was thinking these things he was scolding as usual. You see, it didn’t get light as fast as usual and Blacky never can feel fully himself until the full light of day. Sud- denly, when only half the corn had been eaten, Blacky spread his wings and left in a great hurry. In fact, he made Chatterer stop scolding and stare. “Something has frightened Blacky,” thought Chatterer. “He is a frightened bird if ever I saw one. Yes, sir, he is a frightened bird. There must be some one around. I guess I'll keep under here for a while and keep my tongue still.” So Chatterer did both these things. He kept under the corncrib and he kept his tongue still. At the same time he peeped out and used those bright eyes of his for all they were worth. It was fortunate for Chatterer that he did. He saw something shadowy pass swiftly in the direction Blacky had just taken. Chatterer caught his breath. "Honml" he whispered to himself under his breath. “That Chatterer danced about excitedly un- derneath the corncrib, but it was a long, long time before he dared to go out to get the remainder of the corn. You see, he didn’t know where Hooty might be, and he knew that Hooty would like nothing better for breakfast than a red squirrel. But gradually it grew light, and at last it was sa light that there was no chance that Hooty would come back. Neither was there armer Brown's Boy out. So it was that Hooty the Owl did Chatterer a turn, for Chatterer had that corn all to himself. (Copyright, 1930.) P . Foot ball position: abbr., . Crude mineral. . Lubricator. .
