FINANCIAL. - CHRTHAS AN ‘Report From 31 D. C. Clubs Reveals ‘Sharp Gain for 1930. By EDWARD C. STONE. Christmas savings clubs in 31 Wash- ington banks have again shattered all .wvhu records total T- : amoun! in“a single yedr, President Wilmer J. This is an’ increase of 3,729 accounts over last year, when the total member- ship was 87,701, and a gain in the amount subscribed over 1929 of $330,- 194, last year'’s subscriptions to the va- rious clubs having been $7,462,079. ‘The splendid increase of nearly 3.800 members and the substantial advance in the funds to be set aside during the present year in clubs are most gratifying to President Waller. Unstinted praise is due Eliot H. Thomson of the Washington Loan & ‘Trust Co., who is chairman of the as- sociation’s advertising committee, and his tes. Mr. Thomson has been ‘hairman of the important committee :uruunlgempndhnputlnanut deal of ‘v ‘hard work in pushing the savings idea. Substantial Gains Surprise. ‘The gains in both members and de- its are a real surprise. Local bankers ad no way of telling how great a det~ ent to savings the New York stock ‘market crash might prove. Many feared that the Christmas savings clubs this year would reveal a drop in the number of members as well as in the amounts subscribed. During the last part of 1929 savings sccounts in Washington and all over the country suffered quite severe de- clines. Some of this money was with- drawn to protect ‘margin accounts in New York, other funds were used to brace up security loans made through the hnza and still more savings bank mon ities ey was employed in buying secur- outright which investors had never. cfiefl to-own, . - = hmx]\n zfl%vmmt, however, tly made people. & S s e of Chairman Thomson, the District Bankers' Association put on the usual co-operative campaign, vividly pointing out the advantages of Christmas Sav- reas. . two of the 12 districts in sales, the Richmond with an advance of 1.8 over December, 1929, and San reporting a gain of four- 1 per cent. Department store sales for the United States as a whole were off 2.5 per cent, which makes the gain of almost 2 per is territory the more remark- able.
