Oval Double Roasters 12-Cup Coffee Percolators By the Associated Press. , Calif., January 30.—A terrific explosion blew out the front of | the Filipino Center, an old mansion used @8 & club hostess here, yesterday. Al- though dozens of Pilipinos were sleeping in the struture, no one was reported injured The facade al the building, which is located in one of the poorer residential sections in the southern portion of the city, was hurled across the street hy the blast. Police reservists surrounded the structure. Powder experts said the ex- plosion was probably caused by a blast of black powder set under the front porch. Many of the Pilipino occupants of fi:e building were thrown from their beds by the blast, but a few bruises were the only injuries reported. Aftermath of Riots. Police viewed the explosion as an aftermath of recent anti-Filipino rioting in Watsonville, San Jose and other cen- tral California cities. ‘There have been individual clashes between whites and Filipinos here dur- ing the last week, but these have been of a minor nature. The Filipino Center, used as a dance hall and dormitory, utilized white girls as entertainers. The use of white girls as entertainers in a club at Watson- ville was a contributory cause to the trouble there. A few minutes after the explosion re- ports of riots in the business district be- Rn pouring into police headquarters, it proved to be fist fights between Fili- nlnns lnd Whites at widely separated Motorman Saw Sedan. Charles Woodrow, a street car mntor- man, reported he saw, from the vantage | of his car, a large biue sedan automo- bile speed by the Filipino Club. A man in the car hurled something at the building, and the blast that followed g:n out the entire front of the building, Peuoe said Filipino leaders here have been conducting themselves with ad- mirable restraint during the last week, during which several uuulu upon Fili- pinos have been repo: ‘This city has Whl! is descrlbed as the largest Filipino colony in California, about 15,000 islanders having a more or less permanent residence here. In addi- tion, Stockton is the center of labor dis- tribution in-the Delta farming region, and all of the larger Filipino labor con- tractors have hepdquarters here.
