¢ ILLITERAGY FIGHT LAUNCHED TODAY National Group Would Reduce United States Percentage Before Census. ‘The first gun in a Nation-wide drive to combat illiteracy was fired by national conference of illiteracy today in an effort to reduce before taking of census in April, the num- ber of people in the United States who cannot read and write. An intensive campaign, beginning early in February, is to be undertaken by the National Advisory Committee on Illiteracy, working with State edu- cation boards, to teach the thousands of illiterates at present in the United States the rudiments of reading and writing. Letters to State ten- dents and_commissioners of education, signed by Secretary of the Interior Wil- bur, who is chairman of the committee, already have gone out. These letters urge the State officials and educators to confer with their governors with a view to the appointment, if such an agency does not now exist, of a State illiteracy committee of 20 members with which ‘The next step will be the furnishing of reading and educational material to those who cannot read and write. Three thousand county superintend- ents of education will be asked to join with the State and national committees in developing the local program and to contribute their information and expe- rience to the intensive drive. Complete and detailed plans have been worked out by the national com- mittee for carrying into the States and into every home the desire for educa- tion. These plans include location of all illiterates, bringing them into classes ‘wherever possible and sending teachers to individuals who cannot attend classes. Comprehensive text books of a rudimen- tary nature will be furnished to all illit- erates and will be made available to all communities vlhki}l have not Tg'l“dy organized their illiteracy campaign. The United States now lags behind six_nations in literacy. With the approval of President Hoover, the national advisory commit- tee was appointed last November by Sec- retary Wilbur. The committee chose Mr. Wilbur as its chairman and made Dr. William John Cooper, commissioner of education, its vice chairman. Mem- . Allen, Kansas; Dr. J. A. C. Chandler, Virginia; Dr. A.
