ARFAK SEES UNUSED FORTLAWD Would Bring Idle Property Back for Productivity and Taxation. Special Dispateh to The Star. WOODLAWN, Va., January 28— | County _Engineer F. Norvell Larkin and E. H Allen, president of the Fair- fax County Chamber of Commerce, rep- resenting Fairfax County interests; Col. Edward H. Schultz, commandant of Fort Humphreys; Capt. William N. ‘Thomas, executive officer, and Clpt‘ J. Montgomery Ward, quartermaster, | representing the Federal Government, | held a conference at Fort Humphreys | to discuss the problem presented by the Government ownership of the 2,000 acres of land in Mount “Vernon dis- trict adjoining the Fort Humphreys Teservation. ‘This conference was the outgrowth | of a movement set on foot almost two years ago by the Fairfax County Cham- ber of Commerce, designed to bring back into private ownership and pro- ductivity the land purchased by the Government at the outbreak of the World War, but so far never used. Although authorized by Congress to return this land to private ownership, the War Department refuses to sell, stating it will be needed for the future expansion of the Engineering School at Fort Humphreys. i Moore Takes Hand. Through the good offices of Repre- | sentative R. Walton Moore, officials of | the War Department have had brought to their’ attention the situation ex- isting in Fairfax County, which is not | only deprived of the taxable revenue it formerly received from this property, but which also has been required to| maintain the slightly more than 8| miles of county roads traversing or| skirting this acreage. Fairfax County, | and especially Mount Vernon district, | has been called on to give liberally of its taxable lands to the District of Columbia for its workhouse and re- formatory, and to the Federal Govern- ment for ‘the 4,000 acres in the Fort Humphreys reservation, for Mount Ver- non and other tax-free properties. The particular roads which traverse the sec- tion at present under discussion are among_the most important in the dis- trict, Mr. Allen points out, as they connect the feeder roads and take care of a steadily increasing burden of traffic. One Taxpayer on Road. One of the roads in question is a section of the old Richmond highway from Accotink to Pohick, approximately 2 miles long. Only one taxpayer lives on this road, yet the county is re- quired to maintain it. Other roads in- cluded in the plans under discussion THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON. D. As a result of the conference Col. Schultz will take up with the office of the chief of engineers, United States ‘War Department, the question of sup- plying sufficient funds to ; th the Government now maintains the road through Fort Myer, and one-half the expense of the upkeep of the border roads, also approximately 4 miles long, where one side borders Government land, the other private property. Using the present standard of road mainte- nance in Fairfax County, this would mean an expenditure by the Federal Government of approximately $2,000 per_year, with a corresponding saving to “g;e county for use on other county roads. s g Has 10 Pairs of Skates.
