M’GRATH DIES IN HIS SLEEP Deceased Was Genefnl Manager of George Washington Stone Corporation, George Bangs McGrath of 3421 Thirty-fourth place, Cleveland Park, died during his sleep last night. His body was found in bed this morning. Mr. McGrath was born in Chicago, 1L, and was 54 years of age. During his earlier years, he was connected with the Chicago Record-Herald, Later he engaged in the paving industry and in the supplying of building trade ma- terials. At the time of his death he was_general manager of the George Washington Stone Corporation of this city. ] While a resident of Raleigh, N. C., where he was previously engaged in business, Mr. McGrath was prominent in Magonic circles, having been active in Blie Lodge Masonry and in_the Anclent and Accepted Scottish Rite. Surviving are his wife, one son, James P. McGrath of this city; his mother, Mrs. Augusta K. McGrath, and brother, M. K. McGrath of London, England. Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Rock, 76 ‘years old, a lifelong resident of Washington, who died suddenly at her home, 611 Sixth street southwest, were held from the residence at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Burial was in the Congressional Cemetery. Mrs. Rock, wife of the late Andrew A. Rock, was well known in the South- west section for her charitable work, having long engaged in welfare activity and practical nursing. In 1923 she celebrated her fiftieth wedding anni- versary. Mrs. Chapman was born in this city in 1869 and had been a life- long resident here. She is survived by two daughters, Miss Marion L. Chap- man, a teacher at Columbia Junior High School, and Mrs. John McLean of this city; two brothers, Charles 3. Fletcher of Philadelphia and Edward B. Fletcher, and a sister, Miss Ruth E. Fletcher. FEDERAL JUDGE SCORES SEARCHING OF AUTOS Brands Action of Customs Patrol Inspectors in Florida as “High- Handed Procedure.” By the Associated Press, OCALA, Fla,, January 22.—Denounc- ing as “high handed and outrageous" methods employed by custom’s patrol inspectors who ride up and down the highways of Florida away from any border holding up automobiles of citi- zens “to search them for liquor,” Fed- eral Judge Lake Jones of Jacksonville yesterday dismissed a charge against Willie Lewis on trial for transporting liquor. Two customs patrol inspectors had testified against Lewis. One of them, T. 8. Wisehart of Tampa, told the court he found liquor in only about 50 per cent ‘of the cars he searched. “I think, gentlemen,” Judge Jones sald. “this is the most high-handed proceeding I ever heard of. * * ¢ It ought to be stopped.
