POWER PRODUCTION SHOWS LARGE GAIN B7,849,579 Kilowatt Hours -in 1928, Compared With | 80,205,474 for 1927. [ the Associated Press. A 95 per cent increase in the pro- duction of electric power by public util- fty power plants of the United States in 1928 over the preceding year was re- ported yesterday by the Department of the Interior Geological Survey. This increase was represented by 7,644,105 kilowatt hours, the produc- tion totaling 87,849,579 kilowatt hours *during 1928, as compared with 80,205, 474 in 1927. The 1928 gain in produc- tion was nearly 1 per cent greater than ;g;swn increase of 8.7 per cent over ©Of the 1928 electric power produced by public utility power plants, 53,154, 000 in rcund numbers, or 60.5 per cent of the total was generated by fuel power and 34,696,000, or 395 per ‘cent, by water power. Water power, however, claimed the greater increase | over the previous year, 16.1 per cent more than the 29,875,000 kilowatt | hours from that source in 1927. NEW YORK, January 20 (#).—An- nouncement that stockholders of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad had elected ‘Willlam H. Coverdale chairman of the board of directors at a meeting in Petersburg, Va., was made here last week. Several -new .directors were chosen. More than 23,000,000 undelivered let- ters were buried in 1929 in the dead letter department of the Post Office and §250,000 thereby reverted to the United States Treasury. That amount represented money re- ceived in mail coming to the offices, and the proceeds from the sale of un- deliverable articles of value. An odd assortment of articles found their way to the dead letter offices. Narcotics were secreted in magazines :ayled travel under encircling period- icals. An infernal machine, revolvers peer- ing from the lids of best sellers, a human skull suggestive of a Borneo head hunter, and an_arsenal of arms were among the “dead letters.” Letters usually reach the dead letter offices after they have been held in other post offices two weeks. Reynolds, 45, assoclate editor of the Baltimore Sun and until a few months ago managing editor of that paper, died yesterday at his home after a long {llness which dated back to the presidential tour of Woodrow Wilson through the West in 1919, Mr. Reynolds had long been active in newspaper circles, having acted as correspondent in Washington for the New York Tribune and the Baltimore Evening Sun many years ago.
