THE EVENING STAR, . WASHINGTON, D. C, MONDAY, JANUARY 20, GARRETT WOUNDS - THOUGHT NOT FATAL | - = | Alleged Bootlegger Instigated Cafe Robbery Attempt, Police Declare. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 20.—A man| ¢ seribed by police as a bootlegger was | sought today as the instigator of a| robbery attempt in which Garet Gar- rett, magazine writer, was shot and | seriously wounded in a ‘residence restau- rant which has a selected clientele. Garrett was shot Saturday night when he ignored a command to sit still as three men entered the restaurant conducted by Mrs. Madeleine Brown in | West _Pifteenth street on the fringe of Greenwich Village. At St. Vincent's Hospital, where he was taken with a bullet wound through the lung and two lesser wounds, Gar- rett wad pronounced out of danger. With Frederick Simpich, another | writer and former United States consul; Miss Magdalene Davis, an advertising woman, and Miss Hazel Mumm, a bac: teriologist, Garrett was seated at a ta- | ble on the first floor. The robbers had gained admittance to the place by say- ing that they had a package to deliver from “3.” The leader, who wore a mask, warned | the dozen diners to “keep your seats.” Garrett, rose and jamming his hands | deep into his coat pockets advanced | toward the would-be robber. The rob- | ber fired four times. | Three bullets hit Garrett. The gun-| men fled. { Police said their theory of the rob- bery attempt was that the man desig- by the robbers as “J" was a boot- ho had planned the robbery. They 'said they were seeking a former convict, who they believed was the man. Mrs. Ida H. Garrett, wife of the wounded writer, from whom he has been separated several years, expressed doubt that the shooting was a hold-up at- umptt‘ but refused to amplify her state- ment.
