ANNIVERSARY FETE OF CHURCH IS PLAN Fifteenth Street Congregation Was Formed Twerty- five Years Ago. ‘The Fifteenth Street Christian Church, Fifteenth street and Kentucky avenue southeast, will celebrate tomorrow the twenty-fifth anniversary of its organi- zation as a_congregation, which oc- curred on January 19, 1905. Three servicés have been arranged, besides a joint meeting in this church at 6:45 p.m. of all the Christian Endeavor So- cieties of the various Disciples’ Churches in_ Washington. The first house erected for this church was abandoned a little more than six 3!!{! ago for the present larger build- Dr S. Read McAlpin, the pastor, will preach the sermon at 11 a.m., at which it is hoped all members and many for- mer members will form the congrega- tion. At 3 p.m. there will be another service, especially intended as a “fel- lowship” service, to which the pastors and their congregations of the other Christian Churches in the District and vicinity have been especially invited. At this service the sermon will be de- livered by Rev. B. H. Melton, pastor of Ninth Street Christlan Church. Papers, historic and reminiscent, will be read. The evening service, at 7:45 o'clock, following the joint meeting of Christian Endeavorers, will be addressed by Rev. William L. Fisher, retired United States Army chaplain. The school convenes at 7:45 p.m. The church is participating in the city-wide Kernahan visitation evangel- ism campaign, which will be conducted in the city in the near future. When it was at its height the Emperor Charles VI made a solemn vow to erect & church in honor of the great Milanese bishop and reformer, St. Charles Borromeo, if through his intercession the horrors of th? g!l'flbl! devastation might be miti- ate In fulfillment of his vow, he erected the superb edifice now known as the Karlskirche, or Caroluskirche, in the Wieden suburb, which is one of the most highly decorated churches in the city of Vienna. It was begun in 1716 and completed in 1737. The architect was Fischer von Erlach. It is a lofty structure in the best type of the Italian rococo style, and very delicate and graceful. Its most remarkable feature is the pair of colos- sal Corinthian pillars on each side the main portal. They are 145 feet in height and 13 in diameter, and are surmounted by a clock tower. The shaft of each of these pillars is sur- rounded with a spiral entablature in the style of a Roman triumphal column, covered with bas-reliefs by Mader, por- traying scenes in the life of the pltron of the.church, St. Charles. The facade as a whole is very fine, consisting of a Corinthian portico su columns _wide. The effects of the plague are portrayed in bas-rellef upon the tympanum. St. Charles is especially invoked against pllmes because he himself died a martyr to charity during the great plague at Milan. He was the leader of the reformation of the sixteenth cen- tury, that undertaken by the holy Ecu- menical Council of Trent in 1563. No- where were the intentions of that synod carried out more perfectly than in his archdiocese of Milan, and for the pur- pose of assisting in the work of the reformation throughout the church he founded a soclety of devoted priests, | under the patronage of Our Lady and his own illustrious predecessor, St. Am- || brose, who, wherever they established, ‘were to offer themselves to to be employed by him in any part of the diocese he chose and in any work which he cared to assign to them.
