LA—16 * THE EVENING FREEMAN DENIES RUMOR OF WESTERN RAIL PACT Denver and Salt Lake President De- nies Immediate Creation of Transcontinental Lines. ADELMAN RETAINED BY CITIZENS' GROUP Resolutions Ask Purchase of School Sites in Chevy Chase Area. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, January 16.—William R. Freeman, president of the Denver & Salt Lake Railroad, said here last night that he knew of nothing which had happened recently to bring about im- mediate creation of a new transconti- Arthur Adelman was re-elected presi- dent of the Chevy Chase Citizehs' Association at the annual meeting in the E. V. Brown School, Connecticut avenue and McKinley street, last night. Other officers elected unanimously were: First vice president, H. V. Schreiber; second vice president, Edwin 8. Hege; secretary, S. von Ammon, and delegates to the Federation of Citizens' Associa- nental rail route. His statement was made to the As- sociated Press on reading an announce- ment by Bow, Jones & Co. that the interests he heads were about to com- plete an agreement with the Denver & Rio Grande Western for a long dis- cussed unification of operation. ‘The route, it had been reported, would involve construction of a 41-mile con- nection from Orestob, on the Denver & Salt Lake. to Dotsero, on the Denver & tions, Mr. Hege and Louis Radcliff. The nominating committee was com- posed of J. Francis Moore, F. 8. Lincoln and Mr. Gage. | Resolutions were adopted urging the | congressional appropriations committee to retain in the District appropriation bill items providing for a permanent school structure on the Broad Branch road site and for the purchase of school Rio Grande Western. Construction of r sites in_the Chevy Chase area to the west of Connecticut avenue. The original resolution presented by Mr. Moore, chairman of the new schools committee, requested a million-dollar appropriation each fiscal year aside from the submitted estimates of tac Commissioners and Budget Bureau for the sole purpose of obtaining school and playground sites. This resolution was to seek the backing of the Federa- tion of Citizens' Associations, but was held up pending results from requested relief for the immediate Chevy Chase section. Menace to Safety Claimed. Melvin W. Sandmyer, chairman of the committee on streets and lighting, was directed to investigate the reasons for the diminished lighting effects especially on the side streets off of Connecticut, avenue. It was pointed out that the candlepower of street lamps seems to have been reduced consider- ably and has created a menace to safety both to pedestrians and automobile traffic, and tends to stimulate lawless- ness. Washington's lighting system was characterized as greatly inferior to any other representative city in the coun- try. Complaint was registered also against the extinguishing of street lights three-quarters of an hour before sunrise. Amendments to the constitution were proposed providing for the relinquishing of jurisdiction over the association's former territory now contained within the limits of the Forest Hills Citizens’ Association, to the south of Chevy also to extend the western boundary line of the association to Wis- consin avenue, Object to Wording of Sign. It was voted to continue efforts to have objectionable wording deleted from a signboard on Connecticut ave- nue. The sign in question gives the impression that a funeral home is to be erected in the community and has resulted in consternation in the neigh- borhood. Harry B. Hambleton, A. R. Horn, L. T. Walter, H. L. Whittemore and the cut-off would permit use of thel Moffat tunnel and effect a reduction oll about 12 hours in running time. SERGT. J. A. SPRINGMAN 30 YEARS WITH POLICE C. January 16.— ‘The Providence oJurnal yesterday said that President Emeritus W. H. Faunce of Brown University, in an interview Tuesday, said: “When we place the selling of a glass of beer in the same category as forgery or arson and think hat by merely increasinz the penalties we can increase obedience, we are con- fusing moral issues for the whole Na- tion.” Expressing his reaction to the coun- try's 10 years of prohibition, Dr. Faunce deplored indulgence in “bitter person- alities” by opponents and proponents of prohibition. He expressed the opinion that, while the country is having a “tragic experience,” a general agree- ment will be forthcoming eventually if “the spirit of tolerance for other men’s opinions is preserved.” A national tendency to drink less beer and more tea is indicated in the last annual report of the British com- oners of customs and excise.
