THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 1930. " NEW PRINCIPALSHIP 15 GIVEN CANTRELL Teacher of Brightwood Junior High to Take Up Post at Paul Junior High. Lawson J. Cantrell, teacher in skasge of the Brightwood Junior High School Annex, was appointed principal of the new Paul Junior High School at a meeting_yesterday afternoon of the Board of Education. Dr. Frank W. Ballou, stiperintendent of schools, announced that Mr. Cantrell was chosen from six applicants for the position only after a thorough examina- tion of the record and_experience of each. The new principal is a graduate of North Texas State Normal School, George Washington University, with de- grees of A.B. and M. A., and of Colum- bia University in courses in supervision and administration and direction of a junior high school. He has taught in Texas, and as a teacher of science, man- ual training and mechanical drawing, has served at the Macfarland Junior Be Polite About It, Says ‘Bossy’ Gillis, And Have Your Beer By the Assoclated Press. NEWBURYPORT, Mass., Janu- ary 9.—Beer for the members of clubs which keep reasonable hours and do not abuu the privi- lege is approved by Mayor An- drew J. (Bossy) Gillis. In his inaugural address Mon- day during an attack on the police, he said: “If the police wanted to raid a club, why didn't they raid the club which blackballed me? I believe that it's all right for clubs to have beer for their mem- bers if they keep reasonable hours and refuse it to men who abuse it. Bootleggers are carrying booze through the city all the time and the policemen stand and watch them.” Tourists Break Record. OTTAWA, Ont., January 9 (#).—The department of national fevenue has an- nounced that an estimated total of 4,000,000 tourists crossed the border from the United States into Canada last year and spent approximately $300,000,000. Given Wide Indorsement. Every school and citizen organization in the community gave him its unquali- fied indorsement, Dr. Ballou announced. Mr. C.ntrell is 37 years old, is married and has one child. The possibility that at some time in the future every graded school will have a matron to care for its small children appeared yesterday with the announce- ment that all delegates making recom- | mendations for the next years budget | will be asked to express some opinion on this subject. The proposition was brought before the board by Mrs. Leslie B. Wright, & mother, of the new Murch School, who requested that a colored woman Who formerly, was employed as caretaker of the portable buildings there be retained as_a matron or janitress. Dr. Ballou explained that the granting of this was impracticable because of the nature of the work to be done and the lack of funds for the employment of any one except an engineer, janitor and a fireman. The school superintendent reported progress in the electrifying of portables throughout the District. Of the 26 buildings first ordered electrified, he said, work on 25 has been completed. : —RIPE HAWAIIAN— PIN PERPETUAL BUILDING ASSOCIATION PAYS 5% Compounded Semi-Annually Assets Over $20,000,000 Surplus $1,000,000 Cor. 11th & E Sts.
