HE great basin of Titicaca, which runs north and south a distance of some 1,500 miles between the two Cordilleras, or chains of the Andes, is the highest tableland in the world, save that of Central Tibet, and the mountains surrounding it are unrivaled except by the Himalayas themselves. In thls unique situation lies Lake Titicaca, 4,000 square miles in area and over 700 feet deep, on whose shores flowered a civilization long before Euro- peans ever saw the shores of the South- ern American Continent. Manco Capac was looked upon as the heaven-sent founder of this clvilized empire and mighty temples and palaces were erected around the like in his honer. The greatest of these was a temple of prodigious wealth and splen- dor, which stood upon the very island from which the first Inca went forth to his coronation, and this became the mecca of ancient Peru. The ruins re- main today, some of them bullt of blocks of stone as enormous as those used in the Pyramids of Egypt. ‘With the Spanish and Portuguese, who came into South America early in the sixteenth century, came the representa- tives of the Roman Church, who soon established missions throughout the land and set about its slow and tient labors in behalf of the natives. ! They built at Copacabana, a town on a peninsula in the southern part of the lake, a shrine to the honor of Our Lady, which is celebrated throughout South America, and is to Bolivia what that of Guadalupe is to Mexico and that of Lourdes is to France. The church is a large edific of brick, with its towers ingeniously ornamented with colored tiles. Its interior contains an image of Our Lady of Copacabana and is mag- nificent with the offerings of pilgrims and devotes.
