BEDTIME STORIE The Turkey Dinner. There's nothing more uncertain then talnty on which you pian. A 2 Reddy Fox. 1t is curious how in this world things turn out so differently from what 1s ex- pected. Just take the case of Reddy Fox and Mrs. Reddy and Hooty the Owl. All three had planned and schemed for a turkey dinner. All three thought they had been exceedingly smart. Hooty had spied on Reddy and Mrs. Reddy without knowing that all the time they knew what he was doing. So at last they had led him to a certain farm where turkeys roosted every night in an apple tree. Reddy and Mrs. Reddy had thought themselves equally clever, because they had Jed Hooty there without letting him i —=_— “NOW,” SAID REDDY, “FOR THE FINEST DINNER IN THE WORLD.” know that they knew he was following. ‘Then Hooty had brought down one of those turkeys from up in that apple tree—a thing that Reddy and Mrs. Reddy could not do, for you know they cannot climb. Being two to one, they had taken that turkey away from Hooty. And while Reddy had been fighting with Hooty, Mrs. Reddy had carried the turkey under the barn, where they plan- Ded to eat it. It was rather rough on Hooty to have that turkey taken away from him in that manner, and, of course, it filled him with very great rage. He had been ab- solutely sure of that turkey dinner and BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. just as he was beginning to eat it. it had been taken away from him. Just where that turkey had been taken he didn’t see, for Mrs. Reddy had carried it (lm while he and Reddy had been fight- ng. Under the barn Mrs. Reddy and Reddy grinned at each other across the body of that turkey. They were about to have a feast. “Now,” said Reddy, “for the finest dinner the world.” 1 eat for you,” said another voice. It was a_most unpleasant voice. It was a voice that made the hair stand up the backs of Reddy and Mrs. Reddy. They sprang away from the turkey and as they did so, Yowler the Bobcat stepped forward and planted his two big front feet on the turkey. Then he looked at Reddy and snarled. Oh, such an ugly- sounding snarl it was! 1'ien he looked at Mrs. Reddy and sna Ol uch an ugly-sounding snarl as Reddy and Mrs. Reddy away. They did a little snarling themselves, but it was feeble compared with the snarls of Yowler the Bobcat. Yowler suddenly turned away from the turkey and took two or more steps toward them. Once more he drew back his lips to show all his great teeth, and snarled. ‘This was too much for Reddy and Mrs. Reddy. They turned tail and ran out from under that barn and headed for the nearest woods as fast as their legs would take them. They had no quarrel with Yowler the Bobcat and they didn't want_one. How had Yowler the Bobcat happened to be there? Why, wler had been having great difficulty in getting enough to eat so he had taken to roaming just as Reddy had. Yowler often goes close’ to buildings when there are no dogs around, and people are asleep. He had come over to his barn hoping to catch a rat. Instead he arrived just in time for a turkey dinner. How he did enjoy it! When he had finished there was nothing left but feathers. He had even crunched the bones. His stomach was so full that he didn’t feel like traveling. But he knew better than to stay there until daylight. So presently, like a gray shadow, he slipped out from under the barn and away to the woods. So it was that Hooty the Owl did not ea’ the turkey dinner that he had been absolutely sure of. So it was that Reddy Fox and Mrs. Reddy did not eat the turkey dinner that they had been ab- solutely sure of. All of which goes to prove that being sure of anything is the greatest uncertainty in the world. (Copyright, 1929.) Daily Cross-Word Puzzle Across. . Invertebrate. . Point opposite the zenith. .
