'HE Mission of San Juan was found- ed in 1776 amidst the greatest forebodings and anxieties and in mo- mentary expectation of a common mar- tyrdom at the hands of the Indians who inhabited the neighboring mountains. They had manifested their enmity in many obnoxious ways and later made a hostile descent upon it. Its situation is a beautiful one, com- manding a charming view of the blue sea, dotted here and there with snowy salls. In the days of its prosperity the fertile slopes surrounding the convent were covered with richly laden vine- yards. At the death of its founder the mission colony contained about 500 Christians and in the years following thousands more were baptized. The convent church, which was originally a very large and beautiful stone edifice, was destroyed by an earthquake in 1812, burying many of the worshipers in its fall, and it was repaired in adobe. The village of Capistrano is honey- combed with aqueducts erected during the prosperity of the mission. The church was rich in gold and silver ves- sels, which long ago disappeared, and there was a fine library, a portion of which still remains. Like the rest of the California mis- sions, its glory has never returned since the secularization, though here, as else- where, a few Franciscans have crept | back to the scenes consecrated by o | many memoties of the spiritual and | material achievements of ‘their order.
