It {s a hald-up, anyhow, the Government's demand for dust, 50 we must mortgage house and cow—we only pay because we must.” So when we make out our report of money we have gained and spent, that document per- haps is shert a hundred dollars and a cent. “Our Uncle has so much to do,” we gurgle, as the sheet we mail, “he can't find out if this is true, or just a pleasant fairy tale." We think we've pulled a flossy triek, we've trained with Joyous, juggling knaves; but some day we'll be feeling sick, and wishing we were in our graves. Three years pass by, or maybe four, and we've forgotten what we've done; the postman hands us, at our deor, a billet-doux from Washing= ton. “Four years ago,” writes Uncle 8am, “you copped a roll, like dead game sports, but you were silent as a clam concerning this, in your reperts. S0 now get busy and explain this lapse from virtue, if you can; all tinhorn arguments are vain—proof, solid proof's the only plan. The penalties for those who fail to tell the truth are most severe; you're liable to spend in jail the balance of your sojourn here.” It isn't safe to take a chance, we'd better tell the ghastly truth than spring a foolish song and dance, for Uncle Sa; tire- less sleuth.
