LUMBERVEN AGREE N S500000 SUT _Cfiarles F. Ruggles, 84, and Fprmer Protege Settle Dif- fprences at Manistee, Mich. Byjthe Associated Press. MANISTEE, Mich, December 13.— | Scrambled financial affairs of Charles | F.- Ruggles, 84-year-old “last of the lugnber barons,” and his fotmer protege | nn}i business associate, John H. Rade- maker, were untangled last night in a seftlement which ended Rademaker's $5,000,000 suit against Ruggles. he settlement, subscribed to by both men and their attorneys after a three- hour conference, disposed of timber and other property in four States and $1,- 000,000 in promissory notes of the Rug- gles & Rademaker Salt Co. Rademaker ‘was permitted to retain extensive timber lands in Marion County, 8. C., valued at’ $776,000 20 years ago, when they were given to him by Ruggles. He also retained an interest in the Calaberas ‘Timber. Co. and the Amador Timber Co., both’of California, but quit-claimed to Ruggleés extensive cut-over timber land in Minnesota said to have a value com- mensurate with that of the South Caro- | lina holdings. Rademaker was relieved of direct obligation for the notes and of a part- nership agreement in the salt company, which he charged he was forced to sign ‘when Ruggles threatened to prosecute him for drawing $2,000 on the latter's account. ‘The case had been on trial four days, with Rademaker on the stand. Rade- maker, now serving his ninth term as mayor of Manistee, was a protege of Ruggles from the time he went to work for him 40 years ago until they dis- agreed in the Fall of 1928. Ruggles is a picturesque figure. He is atill active despite his age, has a white | beard, wears moccasins and a black shirt. He never wears a necktie. Shaw Sketches Burn.
