FRED B. QMITII CHASE IN AUTO RESUVLTS IN JAIL FOR DRIVER Officer Arrests Man After Firing Four Shots During Hectic Car Race. Arrested in a thrilling chtse of 30 blocks over streets made wet by a water wagon after a policeman had fired four shots, Bernard O. Mahoney, colored, 1349 Twenty-eighth street, was sen- tenced to serve 30 days in jail on a charge of reckless driving by Judge John P. McMahon in Traffic Court yesterday afternoon. He was fined $5 for failing to have a registration certificate and demanded a jury trial on a charge of second offense driving without a permit. Policeman K. P. Greenlow of the Traffic Bureau reported that the race attained a speed of 70 miles an hour at times. Mahoney stopped his machine at Twenty-third and E streets and was apprehended a few minutes later when Greenlow_cornered him in a basement. ‘The policeman testified that on sev- eral occasions during the race he was near disaster and that the fleeing auto- mobile nearly crashed into parked cars. For a great-part of the distance the officer said, Mahoney was driving with the car lights turned out, al- though the chase took place at 4 am. TODAY‘S AMUSEMENTS.
