'BEDTIME STORIE MORNNG CROW® MRS R & T vou GIVE U SoRY oF YOUR TRIP ¥ om THE We HAD ONE, PRy AT BY THORNTON W. BURGESS. Farmer Brown's Boy Arrives. Appearances 5o oft deceive "Tis hard to know what to believe. e ““Farmer Brown's Boy. he more Flip the Terrier thought how he had been fooled by &nc’ Billy sossum, the more excited he became and louder he barked at the foot of the apple tree in which Unc' Billy had sought refuge. Even Bowser the Hound began to get a little of Flip's excite- ment, and he, too, began to bark in that great deep voice of his. So when Farmer Brown's Boy came out of the houyse and heard the barking over in PARMER BROWN'S BOY TOOK HIM DOWN. the Old Orchard he started over to see what it was all about. “Those two are excited about something,” said Farmer Brown's Boy. “I wonder who or what they have found now. When Flip and Bowser saw Farmer Brown's Boy comifig they became more excited than ever. Flip was leaping up at the front of the tree, as he barked Farmer Brown's Boy saw Unc' Billy Possum at once. “Well,” well, Wi ‘lé': Farmer Brown's Boy. “Ij old Unc’ Billy Possum himsélf! Unc' Billy saw him coming and backed out along one of the branches. Farmer Brown's Boy then reached out and shook the branch. Unc’ Billy hung on with all four feet and his tail. Down below, Flip and Bowser yelped and barked with growing excitement and were ready to pounce on Unc' Billy the moment he should be shaken off. Then Farmer Brown's Boy happened to think that those two eager dogs down below might kill Unc’ Billy before he could get down to save him. So he stopped shaking. Instead he climbed down out of the tree, left Flip and Bowser at the foot of the tree, and got a ladder from the barn. With this ladder he could get to Unc’ Billy, and did so. Unc’ Billy saw him coming and that it was of no use to try to get away. He snarled and showed his teeth, but Farmer Brown’s Boy reached out ot him by the tail. And then Unc’ Billy tried his old trick again. He Just pretended to be dead. Farmer Brown's Boy took him down, and when Flip saw that he was bring- ing Unc’ Billy down it seemed as if he would turn himself inside out with ex- citement. Farmer Brown's Boy_ held Unc’ Billy out for Flip to smell of, but when Flip attempted to bite Unc’ Billy, Farmer Brown's Boy spoke to him sharply. So Flip learned that he was not to kill Unc’ Billy. Farmer Brown's Boy laid Unc’ Billy down on the ground, and both Flip and Bowser came and smelled him all over. Not even when they blew in one of his ears did he move, and that must have tickled him greatly. Never did a dead Possum look any more dead than Unc’ Billy looked. But all the time Unc’ Billy was peeping out ‘under his nearly closed eyelids, watching everything that ‘was done. Was he afraid? Of course, he was afraid, but he didn't show that he was afraid, He knew that his safest lan was to bluff. He knew that as R et e e was likely to happen X And so_without protest he allowed Farmer Brown's to pick him up by the tail, put him down on the ground aghin, Toll him over, and never once did he move so much as an (Copyright, 1029.)
