An increase of 19 per cent in the " amount of insurance written in the District of Columbia in October com- pared with October, 1928, is reported by 78 companies which do more' than 88 per cent of the total life in- surance business in the United States. Fenner & Beane Move Office. nner & Beane, New York Stock brgkeers, are opening new offices at 1430 K Street northwest after carrying on their business here for the last_six years at the Willard. Their new offices are now in operation and they will close the Willard office at the end of the present month. The new offices have ample boardroom space, complete ticker nngj other brokerage service, private offices, consultation rooms and special boardroom for women in the mezzanine. The local offices of this firm will, hereafter, be under the management of W. E. Lewis and John McLean, Lewis is well known in Washington, having been in charge of the Fenner & Beane office here for some time, and McLean, who comes here from New York, has been for some years & special repre- senative of the firm. Associated with them will be mg;ond Sauter and Gen. Richmond P. vis. Many floral tributes from business as- sociates and customers adorned the new offices today. The managers also re- celved many personal congratulations on their new .quarters. The firm has a Jarge number of offices all over the coun- try and membership in practically all the trading exchanges. Thorpe to Address Club. ‘Merle Thorpe, editor of the Nation's Business, will address the Advertising Club of Washington at the next meet- ing, Tuesday noon, November 26, at the National Press Club. Mr. Thorpe will talk on “Advertising’s Opportunity,’ according to announcement made by Charles J. Columbus, managing director of the association. Mr. Thorpe has ad- dressed the District of Columbia Bank- ers’ Association several times and is an excellent speaker. He is a director of the National Metropolitan Bank. The Ad Club has invited the members of the Washington Bond Club to be guests at the meeting. Secretary Proc- tor announces that the Bond Club has accepted the invitation and that the regular meeting will_be held at this time. Notices have been sent to the ‘members and a large turnout of finan- ciers is anticipated. Federal-American Stock Active. Federal-American National ~ Bank stock was one of the most active issues on the Washington Stock Exchange to- day. It opened at 290, and closed at 295, on a turnover of 99 shares. Mergenthaler Linotype was another outstanding feature. This stock started the session at 103, and closed up an eighth, & new high on the present move. ‘Washington Railway & Electric common came out for the first time in many weeks, selling at 500, against the last sale of 575. The preferred again moved au 92. Capital Traction sold at 75. Many other issues appeared in small lots, and bonds were in fair demand. The ex- change will be clgsed tomorrow. Heard in Financial District. The re-election of C. J. Gockeler as secretary of the Washington Stock EX- change was a reward for long service. Mr, Gockeler has served the exchange for several years in this position, and is on the board of governors, and is a most enthusiastic member. He is vice presi- dent of the District National Bank. Y. E. Booker, head of the investment firm by that name, attended the stock- holders meeting of the Mergenthaler Unot:‘%& o, held in Brooklyn, N. Y., on Wednesday. W. W. Spaid of W. B. Hibbs & Co., is in New York attending a meeting of the board of governors of the Associa- tion of Stock Exchange Firms. The resignation of James Sloan, jr., as manager of the Washington branch of Mackubin_Goodrich & Co., investment bankers of 1508 H street northwest, has been announced. John B. Mothershed will now have charge of the stock de- partment temporarily, and Ralph M. Wolfe the investment securities depart= ment. €. 1. Gockeler. Other Financial Notes. The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad h: declared the usual extra dividend of $1.50 and the regular semi-annual divi- dend of $3.50, both payable January 10 to stock of record December 12. Brokers’ loans decreased $585,000,000 in past week, to $3,587,000,000, against $5,157,000,000 on November 1, 1928 Federal reserve system ratio, 71.2 per cent, against 69.5 per cent a week ago and 68.4 per cent a year ago; New York bank, 80.3 per cent, as against 78.7 per cent and 76.0 per cent, respectively; no announcement on New York rediscount rate of 41, per cent. The board of directors of Incorpo- rated . Investors has declared an extra cash dividend of 10 cents per share on ] stock of record November 25, pay= able December 20. This is the second extra cash dividend disbursement to shareholders this vear. According to William Parker, treasurer of the compeny, this extra cash dividend is “an expression of confidence in Ameri- can business and our belief that any curtailment will at the worst be relatively ~lived. NEW YORK, November 22—In & statement to stockholders of Graymur Corporation G. M. P. Murphy, chair- man, states that audited balance sheet as of September 30 showed liquidating value of $54.02 per share, taking se- curities at market value. Cash assets, amounting to $4,071,000, were equiva- lent to more than $23 per share. “During the period of stress that fol- lowed,” the statement says, “directors; after careful analysis, bought securities which; in their opinion, at the purchase prices represented real values and will show substantial ultimate appreciation. “As of November 15 the corporation had in excess of $1,400,000 in cash and call loans and commitments of $155,000. The New York Curb Exchange and Chicago Stock Exchange took similar action, Since the New York election day holiday, November 5, the Stock Exchange has been open for trading but three hours, from 10 am. to 1 pm., on all week days save Saturday, when it has been closed all day.
