NATIONAL—“Wings Over Europe.” It is significant that two of the out- &hyu of the dramatic year— e official list of the 10 best plays—boast casts which include no& a ay * and the other “Wings the highly dramatic mm which the Theater Guild is offer- g next week at the National Theater. And it is a coincidence that Maurice “Journey's standing both on single woman. One is the war “Journey's En¢ Over Europe.” Browne, the producer of End,” the war play, is also the co- author of the peace play, “Wings Over Europe.” The success of both indi- cates that it is not imperative for a plot to depend upon woman-interest to provide an evening of absorbing drama. ‘Theater enthusiasts in New York were amazed at the guild's staging such a play, but at its premiere the critics were loud in their aclaim. They found & play of humanity’s romance, replete with mystery, suspense and intense in- terest, “Wings Over Euroupe” was a pronounced success on Broadway, and after its current limited tour it prob- ably will be transplanted to London. Rouben Mamoulian, who staged “Porgy’ and “Marco Millions,” directed this distinctive production. “Wings Over Europe” was written by Robert Nichols and Maurice Browne, the former a poet and playwright who once even cast his lot with the film activities of Hollywood. Browne 1is robably best known as & prime mover E: Chicago of the Little Theater move- ment of America, who later turned pro- ducer and actor. The leading roles in “Wings Over Eu- rope” are played by those who for the most part created them in New York: Alexander Kirkland has the part of the idealistic young scientist. Others in- clude Ernest Lawford, Morris Carnov- sky, Hugh Buckler, Sir John Dunn and Joseph Kilgour, GAYETY—"Wine, Women and Song.” Burlesque audiences throughout the length and breadth of the land are familiar with “Wine, Women and Song,” the show which comes to the Gayety Theater next week. All the fun that burlesque affords has been in- corporated in this show, and the qual- ity of the songs and dances is up to modern pretensions. ‘The dancing in particular is said to have reached near the limit of perfection. Harry Evanson, boob comedy star, and “Your Very Own” Jyes La Rue, featured ingenue, are the leaders in the fun. They are aided by George Rehn, Mervin Harmon, Burton Carr, Evelyn Murray, Mildred Janett, the Misses Bettinger and Wallace and & capable chorus. The two big scenes are hilariously funny, according to reports. EASTERN HIGH'S PLAY—Tomorrow. The first performance of the Eastern High School’s Fall Mevue will be given in the auditorium of Eastern High School at 8 o'clock tomorrow evening. MACKIN CLUB, Monday and Tuesday. The Mackin Club of St. Paul's Church will present its first play of the season next Monday and Tuesday—"A Pair of Sixes,” a delightful comedy, with Doro- thy Crosby, Bessie Mills, Grace Spruct bank, Hazel Conaghan, Loretto Mu: phy, Luke Fegan, Orme Libby and Ed- ward Dillon in the cast. The club, & very active dramatic unit this year, is working with enthusiasm under the direction of Denis Connell and Luke Fegan . ROLAND HAYES, TUESDAY. Roland Hayes, celebrated Negro tenor, will open tne Philharmonic course of afternoon musical events at Poli’s Thea- ter next Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock. He will be accompanied at the the Friday midnight premiere with cheers, yells, songs, dances and all the mad, merry mirthfulness of the cam- pus and the stadium. This picture, starring Douglas Fair- banks, jr., and Loretta Young, will be introduced by a lavish stage pro- logue, featuring the Stafford Pember- ton dancers in a unique drill, with vari- ous college colors and collegiate quar- tet, & cheer leader and the Earle Or- chestra, under Daniel Breeskin. Colleges, universities and high schools in and near the District are said to be co-operating to make College week an outstanding event in Washington enter- tainment annals. Each night of the week will be devoted to a college. ‘The picture concerns the thrilling re- demption of a star quarterback who most became a failure because he coul not take punishment. How he fell in love with the college “vamp” and his | subsequent discovery that he wasn't “yellow” make an ideal college picture. Vitaphone varieties and The Evenirg Star-Universal and Pathe News reels complete the bill. RIALTO—Glenn Tryon and Merna Kennedy in “Skinner Steps Out.” Glenn Tryon and Merna Kennedy are paired again by Universal in “Skinner Steps Out,” one of the brightest of farce-comedies, which comes to the Ri- alto Theater, starting Friday. It is a dialogue picture. Tryon appears as Willlam Henry Skinner. a young hero to his wife and a “dub” to his employers and fellow workers. Miss Kennedy is the young wife, whose adoring belief in her hus- band finally inspires him to attain so- cial and business recognition. Tryon ap- pears in some of the funniest scenes of his career, notably the scenes in which he leads the orchestra and conducts an auction at a charity bazaar, The picture is based on one of the famous_ “Skinner” stories by Henry Irving Dodge. % In addition to added short novelties, the Rialto will present Jack White's | educational talking comedy, “Cold | Shivers.” R-K-O KEITH'S—"Rio Rita” (Third Week). “Rio Rita,” Radio’s lavish version of the famous Ziegfeld musical success. seems destined to write a new and glorious page in Washington's cinema annals. Waiting lines continue to be- siege the box office for the second week's showing of the picture. There- fore “Rio Rita” will be held over again—for a third week at R-K-O Keith's. All the rich qualities which drew Broadway crowds for 62 consecutive weeks to the Ziegfeld Theater have been retained in the film preduction, and to these have been added mobility and magnitude which the stage, even under the direction of a Ziegfeld, could not hope to attain. ‘Against the lavish sets is played and sung the magnificent drama of the Mexican borderland by Bebe Daniels, John Boles and a supporting cast of hundreds, with mighty vocal choruses, inspifing dance routines and beauty assemblies. Since Dr. Caldwell first per- mitted his prescription to be put up in bottles and sold through drug stores, it has increated steadily in popularity until todsy it is the largest selling laxative in the world! 4 MOST of us value our health too much to purposely neg- lect ourselves when we are warned of constipation by bad breath, feverishness, biliousness, a headache, lack of appetite, or that weak, helpless feeling. The continuation of our trouble is more often due to the things we do rather than the things we leave undone. Some things people do to help the bowels really weaken these organs. Only a doctor knows what things will cleanse the sys- tem without harm. That’s why the laxative in your home should have a family doctor’s approval.
