C., MONDAY, NOVEMBER 11, DR. . W. DUFFEY DIES AT AGE OF 83 Noted Southern Methodist Church Pastor to Be Buried in Arlington. Dr. Jefferson W. Duffey, 83 years old, for many years an outstanding member of the Baltimore Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and once puwr of the Mount Vernon Place Methodist Episcopal Church South of this city, died at his home, 1211 Lamont street, Saturday, after an iliness of sev- eral months. Funeral services will be conducted in the Mount Vernon Place Methodist Episcopal Church South tomorrow momlnl at 10:30 o'clock. Dr. Willlam Lambeth, pastor, will officiate. In- urment will be in the Confederate sec- tion of Arlington Cemetery. Dr. Duffey retired from the active ministry about eight years ago, his last ing been at Rockville, Md., whepe he was pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Member of McNeill's Rangers. A veteran of the Confederate army, in which he enlisted when a boy, Rev. Dr. Duffey, as & member of McNelll's Rangers, took a leading part in many of their daring exploits. He was with the McNelll detachment which captured Gens. Crook and Kelly of the Union Army in & Cumberlmd Md., hotel, the feat having bepn regarded as one of the most daring of the Civil War. He was & native of Moorefield, W. Va. Dr. Duffey was converted while at- tending an evangelistic meeting at Moorefield while engaged in the hotel business there following the conflict between the North and South. Feeling the call to preach, he was enrolled in the Baltimore Conference in 1869. During his long career in the min- istry, he had been presiding elder of Washington and Winchester districts and pastor at many churches. Among these, in addition to the ones in this city and Rockville, were: Falls Church, Vi Martinsburg, W. Vi Central Church, Baltimore; churches at Har- risonburg, Winchester and Alexan- dria, V Randolph-Macon Trustee. An alumnus of Randolph-Macon College, at Ashland, Va., Dr. Duffey at the time of his death, was a trustee of that institution in addition to serving as trustee of the Randolph-Macon sys- tem of colleges. He is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Nannie Hyder of Moorefield, whom he married July 10, 1872; two daugh- ters, Miss Sue Duffey and Miss Mary Duffey, both of this ctily; two sons, John "Humbird Duffey, operatic_singer of New York, and Hugh S. Duffey, superintendent of Handley Foundation Schools, Winchester. Births Reported.
