Extreme declines in the active issues ranged from 5 to nearly 25 points, with the lowest prices, as a rule, recorded in the last half hour of trading. The extreme nervous character of the day’s trading was attributed to the sui- cide of James J. Riordan, the New York banker, which aroused fears that the full effect of the recent market crash had not yet been fully disclosed and that there still might be bad market situations which would have to be cleaned out. Vigorous Short Selling. Traders who bought stocks for a turn were inclined to take profits when- ever possible, short selling was more energetic and fresh investment buying was extremely cautious in character. Business and trade news over the week end was generally constructive in character. .
