The second man and third gun, mounted in the rear cockpit, will elim- inate the most defenseless spot in pur- suit flying. Since the beginning of fly- ing pursuit pilots have been trained to “get on the tail” of the other man. With & rear gun the situation is en- tirely changed. “The bi-place pursuit plane is no | 1arger_than the present single seater,” Mr. Davison explained. * | e is placed in a small compartment with his back to the pilot and is protected from the blast of the propeller by a windshield. Sits Low in Coekpit. “Unlike the rear gunner in observa- | tion planes, he does not stand up in order to handle his weapon, but is seated with his eyes almost flush with the edge of the cockpit. Fixed to a low post on the fuselage is a machine gun which covers and protects the rear of the plane. “It is not possible at this time to discuss the equipment or performance of the new ship nor the specific uses to which it may be put, for various rea- sons dictated by policy and also because it is an experimental type about which we do not as yet know a great deal.” ‘The reconnoissance plane will repre- sent as great a novelty in design as the two-seater pursuit plane. It is a mono- plane with two motors buflt into the wings. The fuselage also is stream- ings and the landing enr ?rohbly will be retractable, mak- ng it & most perfect example of the flyln,'wlnfl design, so long sought by So_far, the nnly manopunea in the trans- Em class. The new plane wlll be able climb on only one motor. Its great power will make it tremendously fast, mnbly much faster than pursulf phnu now in use. Two of these are being built for experimental poses by the Fokker factories. The reconnoissance plane will carry a crew of three in separate cockpits.
