CUSICK, Au-r-n i "subscriber of the D ning. 4 ‘Woodcot when Marling and Dr. lhnlq came to see me. “That fellow Pell's flitted,” Marling blurted out. “The whole thing’s blown up, Mr. Grenofen. As soon as.a Teal ncheomtm“ gist butted in Pell’s bubble was “wauu think it a good thing tlll.sumkewm involved in Pell's fitting?” I felt a jump of nervs but Marling babbled on about the ghastly farce Monday's meeting would He asked that I intervene to kpep Prof. Laxton from attending. This I refused to do, and then Marling asked that I get in ulxiuc)a witjgy Miss Seabroke. Again I de- cline “I thought,” Marling said then, “you possibly had .enough interest in Miss Scabroke to prevent her name being mixed in scandal.” .. “What scandal?” I demanded. “You force me to a thing I didn't want to say. Pell is an ex-convict.” So Marling’s bombshell burst. ‘Why was he dragging me into this business and using Veronica- for -the purpose? Unwillingly, he admitted, he had made the same charge to Eastley, Seabroke, Royle and- Somerfield. He evaded my question as to Fotherbury, but convincingly disclosed himself as the source of all the anti-Pell feeling. ‘Marling spoke so confidently that for some moments I did not doubt his statements. Then the thought processes began to function again and I realized that mystery man Pell was, but I could not believe him a criminal. I had only Marling’s word and was thoroughly prepared to doubt that. After further futile pleas that I head off Laxton they left. On sudden im- pulse, I ferried to Passage and went to see Royle at his cottage and found Somerfield with him—both in a state of abjection and, as I guessed, because of Veronica. Veronica had left Blackwater a week before to spend a fortnight with Mrs. Fairfax, a friend, in Kensington. Royle and Somerfield, at a loose end, had gmmd Mrs. Fairfax to invite Veronica a new crook play- that night. Mrs, Fairfax informed them that Veronica left for home that morning when a young man called . for her. She thought him one of them. They thought it was I. P‘;]\;uu thought of me. Next guess— ell?” ‘He must have been one of ’em.” ‘One of whom?” I asked, surprised. Didn't I tell you that soon after she’d gone another man called with another car. I would say that it was that blighter, young Fotherbury. “Why not call on Veronica this eve- ning.” snld I, “and ask what sort of 2 trip she had on the road today?” "Bu!ly idea!” they both shau'ed I did not, however, put the to Veronica that Saturday evelanl !flt she was not at home and Mrs. broke told us she was not remmlu until the following Wednesday or Thursday. 1 sat at Woodeot later gazing down to the sea, £o0 abstracted and for 5o long uuttmy mother made a startling state- ment: “Tom—you're in love!” I passed it off, and for once I had not been thinking of Veronica's blue eyes, a thought that always brought a little disturbance about the diaphragm. I had been thinking of Veronica’s ride in a motor car and possible cir- cumstances of the Seabrokes’ connec- tion with Reger Pell. ‘There was Marling’s assertion that Pell had been in prison. Like a flash there came to mind Pell saying some- thing about the Romans being humane to their prisoners. * k k% At supper time the next ni(ht Laxe ton had not arrived, but about 9 in the evening Royle and Somerfield came— to talk of Veronica. Royle had some startling news—Veronica was not &1 Kensington. He had just telephoned. They lingered until after 10—myself én tenterhooks lest Laxton should turn up and his elaborate plan for 'secrecy thus be spoiled. I was so relieved when they prepared to go ‘that I said I would walk down to the main road with them. Just after we had come in sight of the road we saw first one and then an- other figure flit by the bottom of the lane, running. “Hello!” ma Somerfield, and loped down the remaining yards, Royle and I following. “Somebody in a deuce of a& hurry,” said Royle. Listening, we heard quick footsteps, which suddenly stopped. Then a man's v-m:ee‘t then 'nuwomnnl. Then a little as of U nstantly we all ihree sprinted. In 8 hundred yards we came upon her lean: ing ;ninlzt- f‘h’ bn;:k and panting. *“Veron| ” Royle fiflfid “There he goes imed Somer- field, dashing nmr a flndow.
