MNERGANFRE DANAGES A Annual Cost Estimated at $1,112,000,000 in Addition to Fire Department Upkeep. Pire's annual cost in America in round numbers is $1,112,000,000, adding to actual fire losses the expense of fire department upkeep, necessary extra ‘water supply and fire alarm service, a figure beyond human conception. This stupendous amount of money ‘would build a road 400 miles long, at & ©cost- of $25,000 a mile, leaving over an amount sufficient to develop on either side 100-foot lots with a $7,000 house"| on each, containing furniture costing $3,000, with to each a $1,000 garage, & $1,500 car, $3,000 a year for household expenses and a vacation fund for each family of $3,000. After all this had been paid there would still be $362,800,000 with which to_build schools and churches. Last year property owners in the United States paid insurance premiums aggregating $639,979,668, according to the National Board of Fire Underwriters. ‘This was approximately $5,000,000 more than in 1926, when the fire losses reached the highest point ever recorded in America. Insurance rates have been increasing steadily in recent years. Fires and fire losses have likewise been increasing up to the last two years. Insurance ex- perience prompts the insurance com- panies to keep always some distance in advance of the danger line, and rates are not likely to fall. - At least not until a more decisive de- erease in fire losses is registered than has been in the last two years, the only ones in the, last 20 or more to show any decrease of consequence. Closed, it is a little wooden basket on legs which may be ly carried about by the handle, and open- ed, the leaves make little tables to hold thimble, thread, etc., while one is sewing. The sliding-partitioned drawer has beneath it ample storage space for materials and for mending, which is laid away to be done at odd moments. (Copyright, 1929.)
