14 sk 'FINANCIAL. BUSINESS ADVANCE IN FIFTH DISTRICT Reserve Bank Review Indi- cates Seasonal Gain in August. BY EDWARD C. STONE. The Federal Reserve Bank of Rich- mond today reported that a seasonal advance was shown by business in the fifth Federal Re- serve district in August and early September over business during the preceding month. Business for August this year also compared favorably with that of August, 1928. Retail trade in the fifth Federal Reserve district in August, the re- view said, showed slightly more than the usual seasonal increase over July trade, and in ad- dition averaged 4.1 per cent above the business done in August last year. The statement is based on information from 30 leading department stores in the district. Total sales this year through August 81 were 2.8 per cent above total sales from January 1 through August a year ago, and August 1929 sales were 18.8 per cent greater than average August sales in the three years 1923-1925, in- clusive, the review continued. Stock on the shelves of the 30 re- porting stores increased 1 per cent during August, but on August 31 was 3.3 per cent less in retail selling value than stock on hand on August 31, 1928. The percentage of sales to average stock carried during August was 23.7 per cent, and the percentage of total sales since January 1, 1929, to average stock carried during each of the eight clapsed months was 206.6 per cent, indicating an annual turnover of 3.099 times. The rate of turnover during the first eight months of 1928 was 2.978 times. Collections Also Compared. Collections during August in 29 of the 30 reporting stores averaged 24.8 per cent of receivables outstanding on August 1, a slightly higher figure than 245 per cent collected in August a vear ago. Baltimore and the other cities reported slightly better collections this year, but Washington showed a decline from 285 per cent last year to 27.5 per cent this year. Concerning wholesale trade in August, the review said there was a seasonal advance, with sales in groceries, dry goods, shoes, hardware and drugs all being larger than sales in July, with especially large gains in dry goods and shoes. In comparison with sales in August, 1928, however, sales in groceries, dry goods and shoes were less last month, but hardware and drug sales increased during the year. In cumulative sales from January 1 through August, drugs showed the only increase over corre- sponding 1928 figures, the other four lines for which information is avail- able reporting lower 1929 figures. Increased demand for commercial and agricultural credit at reporting member banks and at the Reserve bank betweer August 15 and September 15, and a growth in Federal Reserve note circu- lation, together with seasonal increases in retail and wholesale trade and cozl production, indicate that Fall trade opened up normally, the review said. Edward L, Hillyer, vice president of the Union Trust Co. was back at the bank today after an illness of nearly a year. He was greeted by many old friends and congratulated on his return to health. Mr. Hillyer is a director in the trust company and also vice presi- dent of the Washington Stock EX- change. He passed the Summer months recuperating at Southwest Harbor, Me. Eugene E. Ailes, a former Washing- tonian and brother of the late Milton E. Ailes, former president of the Riggs National Bank, and John Leland Cross have become members of the New York Stock Exchange firm of Carter & Co. Both men are former executives of the the National City organization, but left to join the Carter firm. Ailes came to Washington in 1912 with James B. Colgate & Co. and later was instru- mental in reorganizing N. W. Halsey & Co., as the local unit of the National City Co. The local office of Clark, Childs & Co. has been taken over by Mackubin, Goodrich & Co., according to James Sloan, jr. who assumed charge of the office yesterday. He will supervise the brokerage end of the business and Ralph M. Wolfe the investment di- vision. Baltimore and has memberships in both the New York and Baltimore Stock Exchanges. No changes in personnel are contemplated, it was said. Exchange Honors C. J. Bell. The Washington Stock Exchange paid a special tribute to Charles J. Bell, who died early today in St. Luke's Hos- pital in New York City. The exchange adjourned out of respect to his mem- ory. Secretary C. J. Gockeler presided at today's session and asked Albion K. Parris, one of the oldest members of the exchange, to say something about Mr. Bell. Mr, Parris paid the financier a brilllant and fitting_tribute. Trading was very light during the trading session today. Ten shares of Capital Traction sold at 8815, ex divi- dend, and five more at 8815, a new low. Potomac Electric Power 5!, per cent stock moved at 1057, 10615 and 106%. ‘Ten shares of Security Savings & Com- mercial sold at 515, Lanston registered 130 and Mergenthaler 103's. There were several $1,000 bond transactions. g e L CAPITAL TRACTION SITUATION REVIEWED President Hanna Informs Stock- holders of Views Held by Directors. Edward L. Hillyer. President John A. Hanna of the Capi- tal Traction, in a letter accompanying the quarterly dividend checks, said in part the stockholders: #Although recent months show a ten- dency toward improvement, earnings for 1929 have been less than in 1928, and unless conditions change prior to the next dividend date, January 1, 1930, your directors feel that it may not be advisable to continue dividends at the existing rate. #Hearings were held on our applica- tion for increased fare almost continu- ously from July 29 up until September 10, at which evidence was prescnted showing that the company is now and has been for many years earning much less than a reasonable return on the value of its property as legally deter- mined by the court ‘:{’ l‘:tgfiw§‘,‘. rg: ce Was pr al i Shich y contndicmdmth:: rnished by us.
