G_ST More than 1,000 delegates and visitors | to come here because of | { the building of the National Memorial | AR, WASHI SKUTARI is the largest suburb of Constantinople and, like that city of the Golden Horn and like Rome, it is built on seven hills, It is the ancient Chrysopolis, or golden town, so named because of the huge ransoms paid here to Persians after many a war; and it has been from the very remotest times the great rendezvous of all caravans arriving from Asia, and the spot from which all travelers from Constantinople commenced their eastward journeys. The bazaars and the mosques of Sku- tari give it a characteristically Oriental appearance, but the finest buildings in the city are those of Italian origin. Nevertheless, its mosques, of which there are elght. deserve some attention in spite of the fact that immense St. So- phia, across the straits of the Dar- denelles, dominate the scene and cre- ate the greatest interest. Mosque of Ibrikjamisi, Skutrai, Turkey s woaY, SKEPTHMban 2zl ‘That of Ibrikjamisi, or Mosque of the Coffee Pot, is perhaps the most interest- ing of the group, not architecturally, perhaps, since it has few detalls worth describing, but because of its history and one of its functicns. It was erect- ed by the Sultan Suleiman, he who ruled so gloifously and so_ successfully during the first part of the sixteenth century that he was called the Magnifi- cent. “And it catered not only to the st:lrltunl welfare of whoever might enter its portals, but to their physical needs as well. For it had a kitchen for the | poor, where they received daily two meals consisting of a basin of soup and a roll. Strangers received the same food and a three-day ration for each horse, | no questions were asked, and the strang- er was given the blessing of Allah to | assist him on his weary way.
