BALTIMORE, 74, EDUCATOR, [SDEAD World Recognition Won for Genius in Metallurgy and Engineering. Prof. Jeremiah D. Baltimore, 74 years old, for 32 years a teacher in the col- ored public schools of this city, whose genius in engineering and metallurgy had gained him international recogni- tion, died at his residence, 1435 S street, Monday after an illness of two weeks. He last taught at Armstrong High School, retiring seven years ago. As a small boy Prof. Baltimore in- vented a steam engine, with a coffee pot used for a boiler. He was “‘written up” in several newspapers at the time, and was carrying one of the papers, containing -the story about him, while walking near the White House, when he was noticed by a man close to Presi- dent Grant. After questioning the boy, the man invited him in to see the President. The latter, being unusually interested in the youth's cleverness and his invention, told him he was too smart a boy to be walking around town and appointed him to a position in the Navy Yard. Later he was sent to League Island for further training, and, after obtain- in= a preliminary education on the the- ery of the things with which he had been working, was graduated from Franklin Institute, Philadelphia. His knowledge of engineering and metallurgy fast gained him recognition among the scientists of the time and caused him to receive an invitation to join the Royal Society of Arts, London, STAR, WASHINGTON, Chicago Would Bar Low-Speed Vehicles On Week End Roads By the Associated Press. CHICAGO, August 1.—Slow- moving milk trucks, moving vans and other low-speed vehicles would be barred from Cook Coun- ty-Chicago highways on Satur- day afternoons and Sundays, an effort to_relieve Chicago's week end traffic jams. under the terms of a resolution approved by the County Board. C., THURSDAY, MARINE PLANES CRASH, FOUR ESCAPE DEATH Two Leap to Safety in Parachutes as Pilot of Other Machine Lands Craft Despite Damages. By the Associated Press. PENSACOLA, Fla, August 1.—Two Marine airplanes collided at an altitude of about 2,000 feet yesterday and both were wrecked, four men escaped. The planes were flown by Ensign H. J. E'sell and Lieut. C. J. Chappelle, Ensign E'sell had as his passenger Cor- poral R. A. Williams, while Lieut. Chap- pelle had as his passenger Ensign E. O. Southwick. As the crash occurred, Lieut. Chap- pelle brought his plane over on an even keel and turned its nose toward the Naval landing fleld at the air station. Despite the damage to the machine, a safe landing was made. The other plane was so badly damag- ed that the pilot could not right it. The two occupants jumped to safety with parachutes.
