| board of Chautauqua trustees, spoke in | tone, paid the following tribute to Lewis 16 EDSON OPPLGES CHURGHINSEHOOL Has “Low Opinion” of Com- pulsory Religious Train- ing, He Says. CHAUTAUQUA, N. Y., July 25— Thomas A. Edison, Henry Ford and Adolph S. Ochs, publisher of the New York Times, here to pay tribute to the memory of Lewis Miller, co-founder of Chautauqua Institution, held court for the children at the Miller centenary celebration yesterday afternoon. With other honor guests and members of the Miller family, the three submit- ted to being photographed for “talkies” and “stills” in the garden of the Edi- son cottage, which was bullt by Lewis Miller, father of Mrs. Edison. They later answered questions asked them by newspaper men. Mrs. Edison and Mrs. Ford Ilater Joined the party. Asked if he thought religious training advisable in connection with academic education, and if religious training should be compulsory in public schools. Mr. Edison replied, “Decidedly no. I have a low opinion of anything of the kind.” Favors Private Power Control. As to advisability of State-controlied water power systems, Edison declared: “Such projects should be conducted as private enterprises. Politicians are not much good in erecting water plants.” As to potentialities of such institu- tlons as Chautauqua, Mr. Ford said he was always in favor of anything of the kind. and added that this was his first visit. here. “Aviation has not yet started.” he declared when asked if he thought that in 25 years the majority of guests would arrive in planes, as two did today. Last night Mr. Ford. Mr. Ochs, Dr. Flmer A. Sperry. inventor of the gyro- scopic compass, Alvin 1. Findley, editor in chief of the “Iron Age,” and Judge William L. Ransom., chairman of the & Miller centenary celebration in the amphitheater, Miller Opposed Wasting Time. “Mr. Miller. a great inventor, prac- tically filled the world with his inven- {tons.” Dr.’ Sperry said. pointing to his development of harvesting machinery. Mr. Edison, speaking for the movie- Miller: “He did not believe that recreation eonsisted in wasting valuable time in doing nothing or useless things, but taught both by precept and example, that true recreation consisted rather in a change of useful occupation. To me, he seemed to be eternally making money in his factory to enable him bet- ter to carry on his schemes for educa- tion.” Three-Wheeled Trucks. Tn the early days of the automobile one of the ploneer manufacturers un- dertook to introduce a three-wheeled automobile which had many advan- tages over one with four wheels. It was said to be more economical in maintenanced and operation and much easier to handle in traffic or wherever short turns were necessary. ‘The only objection was the radical change in its appearance which failed to appeal to the purchaser so that the idea failed and the promoter went broke. Three- wheeled trucks are now being intro- duced in London and are likely to be- eome very popular for the very reasons claimed by the first designer. MR. W. E. MILES “If there ever was a medicine that deserved all the praise in the world, then to my way of thinking, Miller'’s Herb Extract is the one. Before I used this great remedy I had prac- tlcally lived for months on toast, milk and soup and I was forced to | give up my work as I could not go on any longer. For two months I was not able to do a thing, my stomach was in a bad fix and everything I ate caused me great pain from gas |, and indigestion.
