HEAD OF RAILROAD ONGE BLACKSMITH, Sweringen Executive‘ Rose Rapidly in Car- riers’ Service. Van John J. Bernet, the newly elected | president of the Chesapeake & Ohio | Railway, the greatest of the Van Swer- | ingen railroad properties, was a poor | boy who started out in life with an ambition to be a blacksmith. But one | of those strange curves of fate which change the course of men's lives, and make them great or small, as the man | may be, intervened. and he became suc- cessively the president of three of the | greatest American railroad systems. | Bernet's election as president of the | Chesapeake & Ohio in succession to | W. J. Harahan, who retired after long | service to become serior vice president | of the road, was another step in a railroad carcer of 40 years which began as a telegrap operator in a switch shanty an in its'full bloom finds Bernet the right-hand man and_chief adviser on railroad affairs to O. P. and | M. J. Sweringen, the two brothers of | Cleveland, who before reaching the age | of 50 have won control of 15,000 miles | of rallroad and are the central figures | in far-reaching proposals to unify all | the railroads into a lesser number of | cohesive and more efficient systems. Is 60 Years of Age. ‘Bernet's place as president of the | Chesapeake & Ohio places him in the | forefront of whatever is done in_the | railroad consolidation program Sixty | years old now. Bernet. will soon be “out | an the road” on the Chesapeake & Ohio | lines, living in a car and working 20 hours a dn | Bernet orn near Buffalo, N. Y., and after having done all the things | which the ordinary poor boy does, he | decided he'd be a blacksmith and go in business with his father, who had & shop at & country cross roads. shoeing horses, mending farmers’ buggles nndi mowing machines and doing like jobs. 1 Soon. however, he wandered over o the railroad switch shanty nearby. where a telegraph key was singing, and he lost no time learning to telegraph. Rose Rapidly. From that point the story moves quickly. The railroad was the Old Lake Shore & Michigan Southern (now a art of the New York Central), running Flflm Buffalo to Chicago. And the jobs succession: ‘Telegraph n dispatcher, train master, assistant superintendent of division, superintendent of division, assistant general superintendent, general superin- fendent and then vice president of the New York Central lines west of Buffalo, In 1916 Bernet became president of the Nickel Plate and not only made the Nickel Plate pay, but soon took in two other rnflroa& with_it—the Lake Erie & Western and the “Toledo, St. Louis & Western—and made a system out of the three, which is now known as the Nickel Plate System. Acquire New Lines. ‘Meanwhile, with Bernet's advice and guidance the Van Sweringens had been envisioning a larger raiiroad system.! They had acquired the Chesapeake & Ohio and the Pere Margquette, and final- ly the Erfe. In 1927 Bernet became president of the Erie and embarked on 2 policy of rehabilitation and recon- struction which involved spending $85,- 000,000 in three years. Heretofore Bernet has been known #s a doctor whose specialty was taking a sick railroad and making it well and vigorous, From Tiow on his place in the | picture will be that of a co-ordinator taking great railroads and welding them into & system. Under his operation and under the Van §weringen development program the Chesapeake & Ohio is now applying to the Interstate Commerce Commission for approval of a plan to ;oln with the other Van Sweringen ines, and to acquire a few others be- sides, with the idea of comprising a sys- tem of some 15,000 miles of Tallroad, having invested capital of more than two and a half billions and serving practically all that portion of the United States east of the Mississippi River north of the Carolinas. CHAIRMAN NAMED. Constantino Ceremile Appointed G. 0. P. Precinct Leader. Republican leaders of the sixteenth district have chosen Constantino Cere- mile, 68 C street, as chairmen of the precinct committee to succeed the late ed Ball. Ceremile has been a deputy United States marshal for several years, and is well known among the political leaders. He often acts as interpreter for the | courts in cases involving Italian: SAVEMONEY ON STORAGE.CALL operator, 'THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON, D. C. THURSDAY. MAY 30.
