THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C., THURSDAY, MAY 30, 1929.° CHURCH ASSEMBLY REJEGTS PROTESTS Denies Change in Doctrinal Stand at Princeton Semi- nary Contemplated. By the Associated Press. ST. PAUL, Minn., May 30.—Dismiss- ing two formal protests against its action in ordering reorganization of management of the Princeton Theologi- cal Seminary, the 141st General Assem- bly of the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America yesterday denied that any change of the doctrinal stand at the seminary is contemplated. | The protests originated with funda- mentalists who fought the reorganiza- tion plan on the ground that it would place the seminary in a to change in its theological position. | Proponents of the new management plan denied this and the action of the whole assembly in its concluding ses- sion yesterday afterngon added unex- pected emphasis to tBis position. Statement Answers Profest. The statement adopted by the assem- bly was in answer to & protest present- ed by Dr.J. A. Barr of New Orleans, ana others, which charged :he reorgan- jzation will remove the seminary from doctrinal position “that _distinctive which it has the right and the solemn | duty to maintain.” “The General Assembly has delib- erately taken every necessary step,” the answer said, “to secure precisely what | the protestants themselves wish secured, and in the reorgaaization administra- tively of the seminary has done nothing | whatever which will tend to alter the | distinctive™doctrinal positior. which the seminary has maintained throughout its entire history.”" Plea for Unity Made. An answer was also adopted to = protest by Dr. J. Gresham Machen, member. of the seminary faculty and a leader of a faction opposing its presi- dent, Dr. J. Ross Stevenson, charging him with liberalism. He protested that the procedure followed Monday when the reorganizaion plan. was adoped was unreasonable in thet a limit of 10 t minutes was placed on speeches. The answer said this limit is substantiated by the laws of the assembly. A plea for unity and for setting aside minor dissension_to make more energy available for the “greater work™” of the church was made by Dr. Cleland B. McAfee of Chicago, moderator. Great- er activity in both foreign and home missions was also urged. Cincinnati was chosen as the site for the 1930 assembly, which will be the 142d of the church. The invitation was exténded by the Pirst Presbyterian Church there. MRS. TUNNEY TO LEAVE BED SOON, SAYS DOCTOR Former Heavyweight Champion’s Fear for Her Unfounded, Ger- man Expert Declares.
