SPORTS. THE- EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON. D, s WEDNESDAY, MAY 8, 1929 Service Tilt Not On RUMORS OF PEACE | PROVE PREMATURE GETS PRIZE M of Chicago to Stage Classic Game. BY LAWRENCE PERRY. EW YORK, May 8.—The bubble about an Army-Navy game Las flattened to nothing. 1t originated in Chicago, appar- ently born of a desire to s another service foot ball game ther At least 50 1t looks. So far as any an bition which Chicagoans may have w| hold that classic event on the shore of | | “Bubble” Is Seen as Desire | Logan to Share in Team Cut BOWLING VETE ONEY for Sixth Year in Row in City Tourney. RTHUR LOGAN, Washington's veteran bowling star, for the sixth _consecutive year will share the prize money of the champion team of a city tournament. He is a member of the King Pin quint, which has clinched first place in the Washington City Duckpin Asso- ciation event that finishes its regular schedule at the Coliseum tonight. Lake Michigan, the writer is all for it. There never was a service game held | under braver or more spectacular au pices than that between the Cadets the Midshipmen in the Soldier Stadiuin, in Chicago, three years ago. Certain- | 1y the improvement over the conditions | that obtain in a New York ball park when the Army and Navy play was striking. And if Chicago can reunite the two institutions in athletic contest more power to her. In other words, this is a game that should be played. Grid- iron contests with classic flavor are too few to warrant the disappearance of a traditional gridiron battle such as that between the Army and the Navy. Going through the country, the writer notes a public reaction that is mnot favorable to the existing state of st- fairs. The tendency is to look askance at this break—to say that if the two service branches cannot get along har- moniously in peace time on the fleld of | sport what disagreeable situation might | be expected in the event of war. An eminent naval officer suggests that the Secretary of the Navy and the Scc- retary of War order the superintendents of the two academies to enter a room in Washington with orders not to ~ome out until they had arrived at an agree- ment under which the institutions would resume athletic relations. And personally he does not care whether or not the rules of eligibility at Annapolis and West Point coincide. The great thing, he believes, is to have the game. 1t is, of course, inevitable, that soon- er or later the Army and Navy will get together, just as it is inevitable tiat Harvard and Princeton will. If there 1s anything in tradition—and there is a lot—any enduring continuance of the present deadlock would be a downright Teflection upon amateur sport. ed, it is just that already. All the mnn -EII':;IIC mnel“\’:j:ltl;n% whisperings, the manip 2, g:k. a joke o?thl.nn that should be sacred. Yet, at times, the element of humor creeps in. As, for instance, that Western conference last Decemoer when the Big Ten proposed to. make a stand as to the sort of eligibility which would be demanded of q:‘ponem.s Two -ranking Army officers grmmm e ly of :hetr o"nAii\fl..m- tive, an otherwise. any nte" whznwuflbmty conditions— they were strict—were finally adopted this sentence was added, “with the ex- ception of the Amy and Navy.” Now the Navy appears to have been lite inasmuch as she had fot :&'fi?'}:fimflm with regard to eu(iblmy and, in view of the fact of anflcte.\l‘lbmtyr\lle did ot want it. The position was, and is, rather embarrassing. But no more 0 than for the Army, when Knute Rockne was jockeyed iato ‘writing bis famous eligibility inquiry to the Army, which Ilater he explained satisfactorily to his West Point com- Tades. Let the Army and Na Nny play foot bali. The Army eligibility conditions are sat- isfactory to her and are necessary if Cadet teams are to be worthy. If the Navy can get along—as she seems to te able to do—-under different condtions, why that 15 all right, too. But piay ball. That is the main thing. 341 299 297 209 343 Totals ........ 151,579 F. C. D. A. He switched | to the Meyer Davis quint in 1927 and brought it good fortune. In the last| two city tcurnaments he has won with | the King Pins. It is a remarkable record, consider- ing that the tournament is very much | of a lottery. Logan and his partner, Lawson. took the lead last night in the doubles of the Odd Fellows tournament at the King Pin No. 2. Arth got 347 and | Lawson 353 for a total of 700. Law- son had a handicap of 26 pins and Logan rolled from scratch. Logan was even better at anchor for- the Mount Pleasant, No. 1, team. He contributed 363 sticks to a total of 1,589, which was high for the night Jack Wolstenholme is bemoaning a bit of ill fortune today. He entered the final frame of his singles with an op- portunity to beat out Paul Harrison for the W. C. D. A. class A all-events title. He chopped through the middle and fell five pins short of equaling Paul's | mark of 1,128. Jack landed in second place, a few, pins in front of Frank Mischou. His'singles score was 379. Paul's brother Joe and Johnny Welsh totaled 709 to gain a tie for sixth place The Purchasing No. 2 team, with! Donaldson, Malye, Dyer, Hill and Fore- | man all performing well, rolled into thlrd‘ l;h& in the class D, with a set of 1,605. Teams, doubles and singles will be rolled tonight.
